Some nice photos there Peter. I recognise the Mustang and Thunderbolt, but is the biplane a De Havilland Dragon Rapide ?

Really strange looking passenger door on this rather pretty Giulietta. I say "rather" because I prefer it with the bumpers… But OK, if the driver is searching ground effect!

Thruxton 12.10.75

For the next installment of GCC's Magical History Tour we stay at Thruxton but move on to the first October meeting where Formula Atlantic was the star turn. The Southern Organs sponsored race was won by that years Formula Three champion Gunnar Nilsson after a fierce scrap with Ted Wentz who went on to win the Southern Organs championship. Sadly Gunnar would die just three years later, succumbing to cancer in October 1978.

The first two pictures show Gunnar Nilsson (Chevron B29) leading Ted Wentz (Lola T362), then John Nicholson (Modus M1) spinning out of the chicane before fighting back to pip Richard Morgan(Chevron B29) on last lap, the Brabham BT40 of Cyd Williams and finally Brian Henton extracting himself from his Wheatcroft 001 after spinning off.

More single seaters with Formula Fords and Frank Bayes displaying some natty head gear in his Image Formula Ford. Lurking at the rear is Formula Ford perennial Rick Morris in his Hawke DL12. The next picture shows Clive Power broadsiding out of the Chicane while Speedway rider Dave Buttigieg admires his style.

The last four pictures are from the combined Formula Super Vee/Monoposto race. Woody Harris' Formula Atlantic based Genie Mk13 was first Monoposto home in second, next up is Brian Toft's front engined Anco leading Jack Heaton-Rudd's imaginatively named Monoposto Special while the last two pictures show Robin Strange's Brabham BT 25 (according to the programme although I thought the BT25 was an Indycar).

Thruxton 12.10.75

There were two sportscar races on the programme with the Miller Organs Modified Sports Cars providing the quicker cars. The first shot shows John 'Plastic' Pearson and his Jaguar XK120 leading John Cooper (Porsche 911). Following are the Lotus Elans of Richard Jenvey, the eventual winner, and John Evans. The next picture shows Hugh Colman clambering over the kerbs in his Midget.

The last four pictures show the Thoroughbred Sports Car competitors. For those used to seeing large fields of beautifully turned out machines in FISCAR races these days, the standard of preparation didn't seem quite so high in 1975 ! First picture is of winner Dave Preece's Jaguar XK 120 leading John Chatham in his Austin Healey 3000 (DD 300 ?), then Simon Phillips in his Frazer Nash Le Mans, Robert Mansfield (Frazer Nash Targa) leading Richard Tyzack in his TR3 and finally Tyzack takes the long way round the Chicane.

Thruxton 12.10.75

Finally Special Saloons were a standing dish at Thruxton in the 1970s and this meeting had two races, split at 1000 cc. The first race for cars up to 1000 cc saw a trio of Imps battle for the lead and the first picture shows eventual winner Jeff Ward leading Pat Mannion and Brian Prebble. The next two pictures show the battle for fourth and the honour of first Mini with Mike Curnow (60) in a 1000 cc car scrapping with Roger Saunders (72) and Reg Ward, both in 850 cc Minis. Unfortunately it came to a head on the last lap with the three colliding with only Ward finishing.

The over 1000 cc race saw Nick Whiting lead the first lap before spinning off on the second lap. However Whiting fought back to retake the lead and win. The first picture shows Tony Hazlewood's mighty leading Jaguar XJ8 with Whiting's Escort lurking in the background, then Tony Sugden's Escort leads the first three in the 1300 class, Graham Goode (Escort), Peter Baldwin (Mini) and Phil Winter (Mini). Finally, Chris Sims and his Vauxhall Magnum visits his 'local' circuit, a mere 370 mile round trip to his home in Newquay.

Some lovely photos as always Bauble, but how sad the backgrounds look with few if any spectators in evidence. (Not your fault obviously !!)

back then Silverstone had meetings almost every weekend, and I don't think Blancpain meant much to British racegoers, so I suspect that is why it was sparsely attended.
Your Thruxton shots take me back, I had quite few from the 80's, but like so many things, failed to be saved. I passed a lot on to various friends, and gave he negs to a chap who wanted to digitise them, but I never heard back.

So keep them coming.

Cheers,

Bob.
