Hopes for 2007

Barely are we into 2006 & we are already looking forward to 2007! It will be the most important year for the CCWS cars for many years. As we all know the new chassis is introduced next year so get ready for changes in the appearance of the cars, but what else would you like to see changed in 2007? Who would you like to see in the cars, what new teams will there be & where will they be racing? Your opinions please!!

What I would like to see in 2007 is...

1. Higher car count.

2. Closer, harder racing.

3. Superspeedways (that's 2+ miles).

I pretty much expect to see two out of three, so I'm looking forward to 2007.

Keeping with the "three wishes" standard pioneered by Rustyfan:

1. Better promotion/advertisement in the cities and surrounding regions where the races take place (The problem of open wheel racing in North America, and this is happening since the early 1990s!).

2. Teams making more money (increasing revenue) - and doing so by themselves, instead of receiving funds from OWRS.

3. A race in Lime Rock (not too impossible - and, why not, still feasible this year)

I can hardly wait until 2007! It will be an important season. I would like to see...

1. Atlantics teams moving to Champ Car. Any new teams will be great, but let's see the new Atlantics actually used as a development series... getting teams, as well as drivers, ready to step up.

2. Another tire manufacturer perhaps? There's nothing wrong with Bridgestone supplying everyone, but maybe they could take baby steps in re-introducting manufacturer competition.

3. Ok, and from a totally selfish point of view, I want Cristiano da Matta to still be around. That's a wish for 2006 also.

I mostly agree with all that's been said, except another tyre manufacturer. Tyres can make a huge difference and with Bridgestone as we are now, I think there's good parity between all the teams.

I would like to see more ovals and road courses into the schedule.

For 2007 - a network TV package that has all of the races live on CBS or NBC.

I'd also like to see Paul Tracy back in a Champ Car in 07.

A field of 22+ strong cars from at least 11 different teams, ideally all self-funded but without too many pay-drivers, at least 6 US drivers, more road and oval courses with less street parades, and great racing all round. Optimistic but possible.

No more than two weeks between races, better and more consistent TV coverage in ALL markets, more cars, more events, a good chasis/engine package that produces even better racing...

But most important is no more than two weeks between events. A month is too long.

My "expectations"...

More teams. More drivers. More sponsors. More promoters. More races. Fewer yellows. A better television package.

My "hopes"...

At least one superspeedway. Paul Tracy, Andrew Ranger and Roger Penske.

My "dreams"...

The US Government outlaws stockcar racing in all forms.

1) Not just more sponsorship, but increased sponsorship involvement (i.e. Champ Car Happy Meals at McDonalds, Corona promotions, etc.)

2) More North American races that are not necessarily street courses (i.e. 2 mile+ speedways, permanent road courses, airports?)

3) More passing on the street courses

4) At least 2 more American drivers - to show that not all American drivers dream to be in NASCAR

5) At least 22 cars, with a goal of 26 cars.

When Jeff Gordon almost takes in more prize-money for winning the 2005 Daytona 500 alone than Sebastien Bourdais takes in over the entire 2005 Champ Car season (including a one-million championship bonus I reckon he got?), you can see why drivers get interested in NASCAR.

rustyfan, in any endeavor the most popular/prosperious is rarely the best. To put it another way good taste is has never been popular. We live in a WAL*MART world.

3 Things I want for Champcar:

1 - More teams who don't need paying drivers!

2 - At least 2 ovals and a return to Road America and Laguna Seca. Maybe a couple of rounds in europe, Spa maybe?

3 - Katherine Legge earning a race seat thru competitive performance, not cause she's a woman and the media interest it would bring.

"Good taste" are not the words I'd use for a schedule consisting primarily of street circuits.

You will partially get your wish this year already, considering Road America is back on the schedule

I would like to see more races, with fewer street circuits & more on tracks like Lime Rock, Mid-Ohio & Laguna Seca. A couple of superspeedways would also be nice (Pocono & Fontana?). I would love to see Mexico City being run with the Piratela corner put back to how it used to be. Getting Watkins Glen on to the schedule & away from the IRL would also be nice.

I would be pleased if a few teams moved up from Atlantics, with the emphasis for drivers being on quality, rather than quantity, although 22 would be a good number. Getting a couple of teams back from the IRL would be good too (Penske, Rahaal, even Ganassi & Andretti). I'm not saying this because I hate the IRL but because I can only see reuinfication coming through the collapse of 1 of the series & I would rather it was the IRL. This would then bring more money & sponsors into CCWS, along with many talented drivers (Dixon, Wheldon, Kanaan, Franchitti, Castroneves). More marketing would also do the series a lot of favours. To be honest I would also rather they made the new chassis more attractive as most of it seems just plain ugly to me. A more curvy version of the current car, with sculpted sidepods & a lower nose, with the front wing integrated into the nose cone (as they used to be). This would also mean less changes to the car for ovals (saving money). Most of these wont happen but I live in hope!

I'd prefer to see both series race there - the more races at the Glen, the better is my motto (in part since the Glen is easily one of my favorite tracks).

I don't see Champ Car ever going to the Glen though, even if the new management might not be as scared of the Glen as the old management seemingly was. Then again, I reckon it would be a nice feeling for Champ Car to race there now that IndyCar has helped get the work done to the track as well as "race tested" it

In any case I think we both agree that a Champ Car race at the Glen would be marvellous.

2 ovals wouldn't be enough in my view. And I think a strong 22-car field could come together without the top IRL teams - at whatever point they return, smaller teams will be on the rack again. Ideally we'd have a 24-car field without too many pay-drivers, more US drivers.

I said 2 superspeedways, not 2 ovals. I would like to see several other ovals on the schedule such as Dover, Milwaukee, Atlanta/Texas, Phoenix & maybe one day even Indianapolis again! This is one of the main reasons I would want to expand the calendar-to alow for more ovals as well as for more/better road & street tracks, although I feel that the current 2 airport tracks are enough. I would support a good calendar of 20 dates with as many of the popular classic ovals & road tracks on as possible.

How about something more radical, like more street races at night. Personally, I would love to see San Jose run at night. And I did like it when Cleveland had the floodlights a couple of years ago. Denver at night would be pretty spectacular, too!

How about a nighttime Las Vegas street race? Logistical nightmares aside, just think of the backdrop. It would make Monaco look bland!

Atlanta or Texas will not happen, I'm afraid. Remember our experience at Texas in 2000? Anyone who was there (especially in an official capacity) will probably not be willing to try that particular experiment again.

Well perhaps the new car can handle tracks like Texas. How is it that Indy cars can run there without any problems? I guess the problem is more than just technical, as racerkeke pointed out.
