the sniper has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
When I heard ITV had got rid of the F1 rights, I am going to miss James Allen so much...

Seriously though, I was pretty disappointed when Schumacher got a puncture in Brazil 2006. I was not a big fan of Michael, but I would have liked to have seen him on the podium at his last GP.

I only got into motorsport halfway through 2004, but if I was older and had been following F1 in the 90's, the loss of Eurosport's F1 coverage with Ben Edwards would probably have been heartbreaking...

It certainly wasn't any of the Hamilton things from last year - watching him throw away the championship in that tiny little gravel trap was funnier even than Morcambe and Wise!

For me it's either Hill, Hungary '97 or possibly Patrese, Estoril '92 (I thought he was a gonna). Of course, the next season we lost two, but they weren't heartbreaking, but black.

Burti's crash in Spa

Irvine (among with the Marshals) desperately trying to get his fellow racer Burti out the tirewall, then those blankets the medical crew hold to block the cameras from all angles, the commentator's voice getting touched with emotions, everyone in the room thinks of the worst.... long long laps behind the safety car... red flag ... the race gets restarted, Schmuacher brothers on the front row, Bernie walks to Ralf and then to Michael letting them know that Burti was OK and showing his thumb up... fantastic moment, you can see the relief on the faces... those moments were trully heartbreaking.

Lauda withdrawing in Japan in 1976. After coming back to still contend for the WDC, it seemed cruel to have the weather become so bad he had to withdraw. It was absolutely the right decision, but just such a shame that his season ended that way.

From when I've been watching F1 constantly (discounting youtube highlight clips), Webber at Fuji '07. He had a damn good chance to win that one.

JPM being taken out by Verstappen Brazil 2001.

JPM's engine blow up after dominating the field Germany 2001.

USA 2001, another blow up when again, he should have won.

Australia 2003, wrong tyre choice causing a spin when leading.

Hungary 2005, failure when leading the GP

JPM's had his share of bad luck! And then we have..........

Micheal was crying inside the car when he crossed the finish line at Monza. That was when he announced his retirement. He also was crying in the post race press conference I believe.

Australian GP 2001
It was of course early in the morning, i saw the last 5 laps or so live. Then i noticed that everyone at the podium ceremony were very serious and there was no champagne shower. I realised something bad must have happened. Then in the press conference, Rubens was crying and Michael said that a marshall was killed during race...
Hopefully it will remain as the last fatality in F1

Well, I clearly remember he crying when he broke Senna's record of wins...

I can't remember him crying at the press conference when he announced his retirement, which was expected and mostly known by the F1 circus... but anyway.

Not "nit-picking" but it was when he equalled Senna's record of 41 victories.

Yep, and also the sport itself to some degree. There was a certain decision that was taken that made me very cynical towards similar situations in the years that followed. I don't know for sure how much difference it made in the end of course, but it was still a bitter thing...

Still, that is modern sport I suppose.

Apart from the obvious injuries and fatalities which are elevated to "tragic" status, Raikkonen's suspension failure in a McLaren within spitting distance of the chequered flag is my heartbreaking moment. He nursed a flat spotted tyre when the safe (losing) option was to pit for new tyres but driver and team chose to try to win the race. Can't remember track or the year but Germany seems to ring a bell. It is what the "sport" is all about, the relentless pursuit of victory by the purest of means.

Thanks for that.
I knew I could rely on someone to fill the gaps in my increasingly dodgy memory. Tried to find it in Autocourse but obviously looking in the wrong places.
The racing fans I spoke with the next day were all gutted regardless of whether they were McLaren supporters.
