mountainstar, you're looking at a small grandstand photo. Of course it wouldn't be obstructed.

As you can see from this, it was all pretty much obstructed. It didn't make sense since Friday was apparently a "free day" for admissiion. Seems to me if an organizer wants to build local support for an event, they'll leave these things off at least for the first day. They weren't up Thursday, so it only took one night to install, and why not make it Saturday night before the actual event? Long Beach didn't have them in 1976, for reasons unknown, but they were able to build strong local and citizen support inspite of themselves.
By the way for all you Robin Miller haters, he knows more about this sport than all us put together. I find his honesty, irreverence and journalistic integrity refreshing and above reproach. Last edited by Davhut; 12 Apr 2007 at 01:37. |

What we are talking about is shaking down businesses along the track for cash, not how many square meters of vinyl line the track. |

Amazing.
Everyone here agrees that the track was a good layout and would provide for good racing. That was obvious. The negatives, provided by members who were there (Davhut), are dismissed somehow as not valid because of a pre-disposition toward CC. Face it: there were positives and negatives. Wrapping a tarp around the track was not a good thing and attendance (on Easter Sunday) was not great. No one is saying "Kill the event" but some are saying "This would improve the event." And for once, could we discuss this event (or any CC event) without spinning abunch of non-related crap about IRL events? |

What was the announced crowd and also TV rating if released ?
John everything here and on the IRL thread is compared to each other, not really a new thing and not a good thing either but still happens. |

What YOU started talking about and are talking about now is "shaking down" (YOUR term) businesses at St. Petersburg.
To be honest, I've read several forums and posts from people who were there and they all say that the "GA is free" thing was true, except vinyl netting shut down the view from most areas, as Oreo wrote in your link. One poster who I respect said that he and his group looked around and found a couple spots that the vinyl didn't cover to watch from for free AROUND THE TRACK, one of them in Turn 1. I've also read that fencing in an area near the Golden Nugget was covered with vinyl and other posts saying it wasn't, but I suspect they were talking about two different places. |

I couldn't care at the moment about what covers what, that's not the point of my discussion.

Well, then, you can use the term "shakedown" for San Jose, too...more of one than St. Pete because the whole race was at stake there and it was done to an entire city.
Neither St. Pete nor Vegas is the first racing entity (or sports entity) for that matter, to protect their show from non-ticket buyers. |

.9/2 isn't great, but it's certainly better than most of last year. It gives something to build off of. There's nothing to build off of when the ratings are a .2 or something like that which is probably within the margin of error.
A newspaper estimated ~40k people for the race. CC has not released any official numbers. |

Hopefully Long Beach does better in the ratings. It's a better known event, and they were announcing it on the NBC coverage since it will be on that network as well.

Autoweek must have gone to a different race than your informants Indy, they used statements like: WELL DONE, SOLID LAS VEGAS EVENT, healthy crowd, 150,000 over three days plausible. Do you think they just drank too much in the casinos and dreamed up that stuff?
Well, well, now every one knows that Autoweek has always been CART/Champ Car lovers, they are just putting a spin on it, Dont you agree? |

Speaking simply as a working photographer, it was fine and quite a change from previous city courses. One could walk the entire circuit around the outside, pits and back, without once leaving the outer concrete and fence. Corner workers were largely pleasant and went out of their way to accomodate track crossings when the circuit wasnt' "hot." My complaints were with the netting, which covered visibility for potential customers. It was easy to slice through with a razor and the "FIA Legal" catch fence openings were big enough for a 300 2.8.
As for grandstands, there were about 8, and they held about (guessing here) maybe 10,000 total. It was quite easy to "work" with photo holes placed around, the operations guy willing and able to make more. I'm astonished the way you guys let these posts go off into outer space without regard to subject. Last edited by Davhut; 14 Apr 2007 at 01:23. |
