Zolder

Alright, many people have mentioned editing Zolder, so i decided to make a thread about it .

I've found this map of Zolder, and as you see, there's no room for expanding it outwards. I haven't been able to find an aerial map yet.

hehe that new left turn in place of the Jacky Ickx chicane is sorta hard to realise lol, unless you'd want a very steep rise in the the track or of course move the hill away from there

I know, that's why I asked Mike to help do the part after the first section.
Because I've playing around with it for ages, and got frustrated, so I asked for ideas.

okay there is my edit of zolder ive taken into consideration with this track that extending it isnt an option as such due to the surroundings .... it looks like they have a really small paddock so i concentrated on cutting out the chicanes and giving more space in the paddock while keeping that zolder feel .... weather it would work or not ......

If we could just find an aerial map .

It's not much, but it should be enough. I'm still trying to find a larger (and more recent) aerial pic.

I am exactly the opposite. I believe that the chicane, and everything after the chicane is great. I absolutely hate the entire first corners of the track...

I'll try and have a go at it later...

Well, here is an aerial of Zolder

aerial

And this is the best i can come up with to improve the track:

best i can come up with

The part i do not like about the current layout are the 'chicane' & the Villeneuve chicane because for both the straight leading up to them is only 500 meters long, not long enough to make it good overtaking spots for cars.

I got rid of the first chicane and replaced it by the purple line, creating a fast corner and a longer buildup to the gilles villeneuve chicane, quite similar to the part of the Elkhart Lake circuit going through the kink up into canada corner.

With this change the length from the Lucien Bianchi corner up to the Villeneuve chicane would be around 1125 meter and since a fast car (like champcar) would already go very fast through the Lucien Bianchi corner the speed would be to high throuhg this long 'straight'. So i decided to put in the yellow part, a chicane which reduces the speed enormously (it has to be a 1-st or 2-nd gear chicane, i probably didn't draw it right, but that was the intention) and also reduces the straight with 125 meter to +- 1000 meter. Depending on safety-issues this chicane could be moved closer to the villeneuve chicane (there is room) but imo the straigth towards villeneuve should at least be 800 meter to offer a good overtaking spot.

The final change would be the corners before the s/f-line. I didn't like the corners which to me don't suit the fast rithm of this track, so i replaced it by the very smooth blue line. These curves should be possible to take flat out.

Unfortunately with the circuit being surrounded by a forrest i don't see many other changes possible.

ps there is actually a mistake in my update, i assumed that the bianchi corner followed the white line and starte my yellow track on it, but the white line isn't actually the track! It doesn't change much to my 'vision' of how the track should run, just imagine my yellow line starting on the actual track (the grey line)

Interesting thoughts. I'm afraid it's not going to work, since flying cars are not really wanted anymore these days. Just after the current chicane, wich you straightened with the purple line, there is a hill that would be no less than a ramp taken at high speed.

Werner, you should see footage of one of the Brumos cars lifting off at the new Thunderbolt Raceway.

And there are plenty of significant brows still used in motorsport, like the ones at Mosport Park (eased some but still noticeable), Road Atlanta, Paddock Hill and Pilgrims Drop at Brands Hatch, Corkscrew at Laguna Seca, Eau Rouge/Radillon at Spa, and at least a half a dozen places on the Nordschleife.

If there's a problem, it's that the cars have become too pitch sensitive. And that is an issue that should be solved by the car designers, after all, if they don't, you're going to have problems where there are barely perceptible elevation changes, like what we saw at Le Mans (1998 race, 2008 test), Monza (2008), and Sebring (2008 practice).

I've never seen cars or bikes getting airborne on therir own at any of those tracks exept offcourse the Nuernburgring. But offcourse that is a track in another galaxy, with completely different standards compared to the rest of the world. Including Zolder.
I agree with you on the technical part, it is not acceptable that cars just take off when they hit turbulence, a small bump or get sideways a bit.
Also, you thought that amateurs should't drive on pro-tracks and vice versa. Well, Zolder is one of only 2 track in Belgium. I'm sure you don't want to make Francorchamps suitable for unexperienced drivers, so it is better to keep Zolder suitable for everybody.

I've been thinking of Zolder for ages and I've made a new edit after the one in my thread:

First corner made into a sharp 90 degree corner for a good passing chance.

Lucien Bianchi is made into a flat out right hander.

"Kleine chicane" made tighter for passing.

Jochen Rindt has a slow chicane because the run off at turn 1 is limited.

Jacky Ickx chicane goes for a long run for good slipstreaming.
