I have read carrol smith and am reading skip barber. not that i'm trying to learn how to drive out of a book.
carrol smith was good and skip barber seems to be good so far, skip probably stars from a more basic level. |

I read the first "speed secrets" - no the inner one. Very good book! Have copies of a couple of books for sale actually.

Don't get Jackie Stewart's book, it's a lot of "my way or the highway" opinionated drivel. Obviously there's more than one way to drive a race car... I think Emmerson Fittipaldi proved that when he beat Stewart for the championship!

"Going Faster" by ....can't remember - (an instructor at the Skip Barber school) very comprehensive and informative and worth reading several times.

That reminds me of a story I heard where a guy was interviewing Jackie Stewart and Stewart said he teaches guys to do all thier braking in a straight line before they get to the corner. The interviewer then asked him "well what about schools like Bondurant where they teach trailbraking?"
Stewart's reply, in a non to impressed tone of voice: "Well how many world championships has Bob Bondurant won?" My favourite book on race driving is the Skip Barber one, but then again, that was my first racing school too... |

Both the Barber book and the Carroll Smith books are very good. Before attending engineering school, I thought the Barber book was better, but now I tend to think that they are both equally useful.
I also read a book by Senna, which was fun to look at but not really too informative, IMO. |

Senna's book on driving is great - not overly technical and good for newbies, the pictures are more informative than the Skp Barber book I have with its glared filled Black and whites, also read the owners manual to a formula ford or a formula500 and strap in- that's the ebst learning you can do.

Why don't you PM Jellybabe? She is a very good friend of Ant and he could probably give you guys some very good advice on how to learn to race.

I've beening writing a driving manual over the past year if anyone would be keen to have a read of it and let me know what they think.
Its been written for a driving school that I work out to use with novice drivers. |

IMHO the books to read are:
Pierro Taruffi - The Technique of Motor Racing Denis Jenkinson - The Racing Driver Paul Frere - Competition Driving Ayrton Senna - Principles of Race Driving Jackie Stewart - Principles of Performance Driving You also need a sports psychology book - I've not found many but the best so far for me is Terry Orlick - In Pursuit of Excellence. Cheers! |

(BTW. Best book by Jenks is "From Chain Drive to turbocharger"). Paul Frere's is the best for my money. |

first and only book to date is Paul Freres Competition driving, a bargain for a fiver I thought . . .I dont agree with his clothing ethic, but the basics of driving havent changed since 1960 or whenever it was published.

I have the Ayrton Senna book, 'Principles of Race Driving'. It's pretty good and covers most things in some depth. I'm not sure about the diet section at the end though.
It says, 'All meals must be accompanied with non-alcoholic drinks.' |

I've read the Ayrton Senna book like everyone else, there was also a good one by Alain Prost, but I read it so long ago I can't remember the title.
Just search http://www.amazon.co.uk or http://www.dukevideo.com/ and I'm sure you'll find it. |
