Perkins, Larry

What better way to be the first person to post in this forum, and to post about Larry Perkins!

I have lots of info on him, and I'll get it out in regular bursts (right now I am really tired so don't expect much right now!)

Born: March 18, 1950.
Birthplace: Cowangie, Victoria, Australia
Short and brief Biography: Driven in Formula 1 on a few occasions in mid 1970s. Came back to Australia and won six Bathurst 1000s, three straight with Peter Brock in 1982, '83, and '84. Also won in '93, '95, '97. Retired full time in 2002. Came back one last time in 2003, finishing 5th at Bathurst. Currently team owner of Jack Daniel's Racing in the Australian V8 Supercars.

More to come! Feel free to add!

Well done, Chatters; very fast of the mark! I'm just reversing the name to comply with convention where an alphabetical system is being applied!

Not a problem! Tomorrow I'll get onto digging up some old magazines and sourcing more information on him. That sound OK John?

From Perkins, I only know he raced on BRM in 77. But if anyone can find some info, I can do some updates and maybe an article.

Larry Perkins did 15 GP's, starting at the Nurburgring in 1974 with the Amon and later the HB Ensign, Martini Brabham, BRM and Surtees. His last GP was 1977.

His last GP was the French GP at Dijon in June. From there he headed back to Australia and drove for Peter Janson in a Holden Torana, finishing 3rd in the 1977 Hardie-Ferodo 1000 behind the two Moffat Dealer Team Falcons, car #1 driven by Allan Moffat/Jacky Ickx and car #2 driven by Colin Bond and Alan Hamilton. In 1979 he competed in the Rothmans International Series (the four Australian races of the then-defunct Tasman Series), winning in an Elfin MR8. He also competed in the 1979 Australian Grand Prix but failed to finish. He also finished 2nd in the 1979 and 1980 Hardie-Ferodo 1000, again driving with Peter Janson. He failed to finish the 1980 and 1981 Sandown 400. In 1981 he competed in the Australian Touring Car Championship, finishing 26th after only scoring one point driver for Peter Janson. he finished 4th in the Australian Grand Prix behind Roberto Moreno, Nelson Piquet and Geoff Brabham, but failed to finish the 1981 Bathurst 1000 (with Janson as teammate). In 1982 he joined the Malboro Holden Dealer Team, taking over the engineering side of the opeartion as well as co-driving with Peter Brock to victory in the 1982 James Hardie 1000.

More to come.

Larry Perkins - once described by Alan Docking when he walked into the workshop as the man would one could not -

"Root, shoot or electrocute"

I took this to be some form of quaint Australian greeting only to be used between locals of that Isle.

Alan Morgan should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
When I worked at Gordon Spice's warehouse in the seventies, Larry P came in to pick up some bits and pieces. It was at the time that he drove for BRM. He said that he would rather be driving one of the old cars in the museum than the car he was given.

He was pondering the best way to get the sack from BRM

"Maybe I should call Mrs Lou a hooker?..."
