Wow. I wish we could still enjoy that kind of racing these days.
I wasn't lucky enough to be old enough to see it, but I have new respect for the bloke now |

I too miss the traditional "Touring Cars".
*Sighs* Ho hum. Surely there's a market for it in Australia on a grand-scale? Why can't the V8's head more down that route and not this blueprint artificial Nascar direction? Sorry...wrong thread....no more whinging |

Yeah I miss the variety too, a time when touring cars didn't quite look like half baked Sports Sedans (hey don't get me wrong, I love Sports Sedans, but the full blown Chev motor in a Saab/20B rotary in a Datsun variety....)
Especially the 3 different classes, 65 car grids at Bathursts, genuine privateers etc.... If only the rules for homologation were more tightly controlled.... I loved the '85 Bathurst, one of my favourites... |

Nice video, could you imagine though what would have happened between murph and Ambrose last year happening back then without all of the concrete retaining walls. It is quite interesting to see how much the place has changed since then though, withthe pits back then looking like they where just a tin roof.

They were just a tin roof, with some steel tubing holding it up!

Ahh yes, those great days when Hardies Heroes was indeed for heroes... while the current spectacle is tremendous, and fast and noisy, a glimpse of the lead Jag nodding its Briddish Racing Green nose under brakes at the end of Mountain Straight, or performing its exquisite ballet at McPhillamy Park revisits great memories of another age of racing.
Datto, in those days, it was quite common for racers to enter the Cutting with two cars overlapping, but generally common-sense prevailed... It's too easy in this day and age to forget that TW was a top-line steerer in his own right. And didn't they look fantastic? |

And I loved it when Moff called TW an "Englishman"
Its a super lap... bloody hell those Jag's must have been heavy.. they porpoised all over the place...imagine how quick it could go with some of the latest suspension technology aboard |

The Jag must have had plenty of torque, it was in 2nd gear all the way down the hill... when some Commodores (usually Gricey's) found first gear regularly....

How good was that! Great car! Great driver! Great noise! Great Conrod Straight!
I haven't watched the video for a number of years and that has whetted my apetite to watch the whole race again! What was with Moffat's comment "even in Atlanta"????? Another Cape Canaveral reference or something? |

One wonders if on-going homologation and development (TWR were basically finshed with it after the 1984 ETCC, homologation ran out at the end of 1986, apart from a special dispensation to run them at Wellington in early '87) had continued with the XJS, how it would have fared against the Turbo onslaught of the late-80s, particularly the Sierra's. |
