they're not though, they're in a 20 limit! That's what this whole thread is about.

In my neighborhood they just removed them after 6 months for two reasons the first is snow plows (oh whoops, we forgot) and second is that teenagers (and a few of us older folk) go faster than they used to as it adds a little rally flavor to the road. In other words it didn't work but it sure was fun!

There's some road closures coming up at the weekend - I wonder if that will be the first of the speed bumps being installed.
Flatspot - lol at the snowplough bit

Speed bumps and traffic calming in general is an enigma to me. How can anyone justify adding a hazard to reduce accidents?

We have a traffic calming scheme near the primary school which consists of a chicane and a pinch point with a zebra crossing. Nothing wrong with that except when the town planners decided to install the scheme they didn’t visit the site but just drew it on a map. They failed to take account of the fact that the bend before the entrance to the chicane was blind due to the exit being some 15ft lower. This makes the scheme more dangerous than the original hazard. Only councillors can do this with embarrassing regularity.

The government is to simplistic with its "Speed Kills" propaganda. Speed in itself does not kill. Coming to a sudden stop does. Dave brand has it right when he says “you can drive as badly as you like, as long as you do it slowly.”

Campaigners are now trying to make speeding as socially unacceptable as drink driving but they do not play by the rules. Roads which were once national speed limit (NSL) are now 50 or 40 zones, 40 zones are being reduced to 30 zones, often with no justification other than it is politically and socially correct to do so. And then come the Gatsos.

Well, I drove through a different part of town today and found that the 20mph and speed bumps policy is well and truly being put into operation. They're everywhere!
Good point about the general reduction in speed limits overall, Yorkie. One of the main roads out of town here used to be a national speed limit dual carriageway until a few years back when it was decided to make it a 50 limit with a series of speed cameras (including one completely hidden behind a road sign). So, now we have a road where virtually everyone does well over 50 for the majority, just slamming anchors on to get down to speed for the speed cameras.

The road that links up to the motorway? Yeah we have to use that road to pretty much every away game, en entire convoy of cars doing 70 and then dropping to 50 at the speed cameras!

Here in Bury the dual carriageway through the town was a 40 limit until 2 years ago after a boy racer killed himself. Now it's a 30 and traffic congestion is even worse than it used to be!

And has anyone else noticed the other ploy by councils to slow traffic? They now deliberately reprogram traffic lights to be out of sinc so that you stop and start constantly!
