Toyota-astonishingly awful
So what's happening here then.Did they have problems or were they just really very slow. You would expect by now, even at the first race, for them to show some decent pace.

All through the off season I've been looking forward to a strong Toyota showing and now, well, I'm more that a little dejected.

Through the off season there has been very little optimism coming from the team.
Jarno Trulli has been conspicuous by his absence and ralf has only been interested in telling us who isn't going to win the championship. But of course, even as we speak, the tf106b will be ready to make its track debut. |

The signs hadn't been good in pre-season testing, but they weren't expected ot be so far behind the Red Bull and Williams teams. Worse still, STR being in front of them isn't neccessarily down to the engine controversy.

Somehow I can't bring myself to consider Team Willy as second string.
Toyota though, should be ashamed of their performance here. Red Bull has Newey and I suspect he's already influencing the team. |

That was awful. They make a big deal about having the biggest budget & the best they can do with that budget was that race. They were fighting with the Midlands for gods sake! I was looking forward to having Toyota as a 6th top team but maybe not after all.

I too thought Toyota was going to have a strong season what with their 3 development team thing going on.

Toyota are on my list to leave F1 at the end of this year if they don't achieve.

Whilst Toyota's performance was lamentable, I can't imagine that they will quit Formula 1 at the end of the year. If one considers their performances in Champ Cars; Toyota continued to invest until they won and I would imagine a similar philosophy to be apparent. Also, if Toyota are in F1 to enhance their reputation and sell cars, then this aim is unlikely to be achieved by quitting after a bad season. Finally, we have only had one race of the season and a lot could change by the end of October.

Yes, no doubt we will have the TF106b, c, d, e, and f before the season is out.

Personally I wasnt that suprised by Toyota's lack of pace this weekend, they hadnt really done anything special during testing that said to me that they were going to be right on the pace. I was a little suprised today though at just how far off the pace the Toyota's were, I didnt expect them to be in the top 8 but I certainly didnt expect them to be at the tail end of the field either.
Unless Mike Gascoyne can make some major improvements to the car over the next 3 or 4 rounds I think its obvious that Toyota will have a very bad season, and surely there long term future in Formula 1 will come into question. A shame because at the end of 2005 they were really looking like challenging for race wins in 2006. |

Astonishingly awful - I agree! I was half expecting Toyota to be podium material this year on a consistent basis - ala BAR 2004.
What's the likelihood in them quitting as a wholey owned team to become an engine supplier - Williams anyone ? |

Nice to see that Toyota are sponsoring this thread...
Frankly, every move Toyota has made since coming back to F1 has been appallingly bad. To choose to locate away from F1's silicon valley was crazy - especially in a country with rigorous working hours legislation. No way to bleed staff. No wonder they went for espionage. Then to get de Cortanze to design the test mule - someone with no F1 experience at all? Their choice of original drivers was bad, and then when they got a year of experience they got rid of them so there was no continuity. And poached a designer from minnows who had never worked with a big budget. Panis and da Matta was a stupid choice too. I can see the logic in Panis, but someone new to F1 entirely? And then to pay Ralfie an astonishing amount of money for an astonishing amount of time...you would have to have the mental acuity of an amoeba to think that that was money well spent. I had thought that hiring Gascoyne was their first good move. But jeez, he seems to have a Sisyphean task on his hands. And so far he has not come up trumps. |

I was quite surprised by the lack of pace from Toyota. What needs to be known is what caused it... tyre/suspension work? Lack of downforce?
Whatever it is, they do not look good for Malaysia, as there's no time in a week to fix this. |

Same tires as Midland, same engine as Midland almost the same performance as Midland.....
But absolutely not the same budget as Midland. BTW, why isn't Ryan Briscoe racing for this team ??? Do they REALLY beleive that they have potential champions racing for them ?? Did you know that Willy Weber, Michael Schumacher's manager isn't managing Ralf anymore? Has he given up on Ralf before Toyota ?? Is it necessary to pay a driver zillions of dollars when there are Rosbergs, Nelsinhos, Kubicas, Hamiltons, Briscoes, Courtneys, Paffets, Davidsons, Parentes, and sooooo many others capable of doing more or less the same job ??? Why do team managers complain of the cost of F1 and then throw away money on salaries like that ??? |

How cold Toyota lose so much vis-a-vis the competition in a few months? How could hapless Midland catch up to a team with the biggest budget in all of racing?
