Broadcasting idea 2005
Autoweek:
The Champ Car World Series’ 2005 television package seemed to devolve before the season finale in Mexico City, but officials promised an announcement with full disclosure before the end of November. What’s certain is what we’ve known for some time. The package remains a time-buy, and at least six races will be broadcast on CBS. Yet Champ Car is now expected to add four races on NBC, including the season-opening Long Beach Grand Prix, to ensure that key dates are aired on a broadcast network. The NBC races are likely to be in the first half of the year, before that network begins its NASCAR coverage midseason. The remaining issue is which cable channel will carry the remaining four to six races. Speed, CART’s former cable partner, is not necessarily in. It’s just as likely to be a CBS/Viacom affiliate such as USA or Spike. Nor has a production company been signed. It’s clear that Betelgeuse Productions, the New York-based company chosen as an experiment this season, won’t be back. Few in Champ Car were happy with the company’s work, and the series had to step in and pay Betelgeuse contractors when the company stopped mailing checks two-thirds of the way through the season. However the details pan out, Champ Car is going to pay more for television in 2005, presumably with more potential upside in advertising revenue. With ratings as low as they’ve been (compared to CART’s heyday), improvements are likely to be measured in fractions of Nielsen points rather than full points. The increased cost of television coverage might be viewed as an indirect subsidy for teams. Champ Car will be within reach of every home in the United States (theoretically, at least), and teams can leverage that in their sales pitches (theoretically, at least) to sponsors. That would be a good deal for the CCWS in '05 -IF- it comes to fruition. The first four races to be broadcast on NBC before NASCAR rolls in and then six more races on CBS......imo, you can't get a better deal then that, at least not at this time.

I really want to know what is taking so long for the TV deal(s) to be announced. Getting NBC on board would be great. The bottom line is, if it's a pay deal, how what amount will CC be paying? In 2003 the series bore the brunt of the cost and generated a small amount of revenue. It was suggested in another article posted a while ago that Ford might be willing to cover most of the TV cost in 2005.

Snrub, even if it's a pay deal can you imagine the exposure Champ Car would get from those 9 or 10 races?!

Great news... Now let's just get it in writing so the teams can present it to their prospective sponsors! The sooner the better, but I'm sure they already know that.

If it's on two different networks and ChampCar are paying for it, there's no incentive for the network to promote it.
Why would NBC want loads of people watching ChampCar, only for those viewers to go away to CBS? |

luke... If the race is on network, that's exactly what Canadians will get too. TSN only picks up non-network events.

I don't think Molstar/TSN will be able to black out an American network for cable/satelite. When ABC use to broadcast race, they didn't do it.
Dov, don't get me wrong, I'd love it if CC got a 5.0 on NBC/CBS, but I don't see TV income being a substantially different situation from 2003. Last edited by Snrub; 23 Nov 2004 at 22:37. |

It's pretty-much impossible to black out free-to-air frequencies! Unless if the US Air Force didn't want Canadians to watch NBC or CBS, cable networks such as TSN have no choice!
I wouldn't look for any of the Canadian rounds to be picked up on Network, though. CBC falls into that category and already has the Canadian rights. I'm not suggesting that it's impossible, merely unlikely. And Snrub... I think that Dov was talking about "exposure", not "income". Last edited by macdaddy; 23 Nov 2004 at 22:42. |

Snrub, I agree that the TV income will not be that different from 2003, but with more exposure to new fans and sponsors then that may turn around in 2-3 years......let's hope!

I attend the Canadian races but I think they are on Global, aren't they? Not the CBC. Although if hockey continues on strike, anything can happen....
I'd like to have them on the network so my parents can watch them and figure out what I am doing. |

Well right now the ALMS is blowing almost everyone away with time buys on NBC, so it can work.

Hope there is decent coverage in the UK. Only on Motors TV which is obscure satellite channel not available to the majority, or Race Director which is pretty poor albeit good value.

I am sure that something will work out in the international viewership. After all, it is the international support that carried Champ Car this year when ironically it is a US series!

Of course still to low, but it would be a massive improvement with what they had this year. This year was simply unacceptable. |

And replace the word Champcar with Ford in the first part there (before "paying for it!" ) as I seem to remember reading before, correct me if I'm wrong anyone. You've been watching fill in the blanks with codename_47, please tune in next time when we'll be trying to work out what swear words Paul Tracy was using on Team Radio! |

I hope it doesn't become broadcasted on the speed channel....
I couldn't watch any of the 02 and 03 CART races because of the speed channel :\ |

No matter what happens, a Champ Car TV package will have some assembalance of a cable TV deal in it. Every single race will not be broadcasted on network TV. It sucks when comparing it to NASCAR, but that is the reality of the situation |

What I didn't like was the crappy Spike coverage overall, and the way that the races were confined to just 2 hours of broadcast time. |
