Engineers Salary

Just out of a matter of interest (although it could be due to the fact that i wish to do this as a career)

Does anyone know how much a Race Engineer for a formula 1 team can expect to earn.

Any comments on this would be appreciated

Thanks

Either. I was just looking for a rough idea. I take it there's a big difference between the salaries then.

If anyone can let me know it would be appreciated

I was reading the Steve Matchett book about being a mechanic for Benetton in the early to mid nineties and I remember being surprised at the low level of salary (for such a glamourous job in a 'sport' awash with cash). From memory it was around the 20-grand mark.

I believe there are 2 Steve Matchett books, the first was about the season he was TGF's spannerman and the 2nd (the one I read) was a more general autobiographical piece about his career. It seemed that the pay for working in F1 wasn't much more than working in a Porsche and Ferrari dealership (which is where he'd come from). You'll probably find that the engineers don't get to see any of the place they are visiting as they are bust working.
