Le Mans 2013 big screens and Kangaroo TV?

I would like to start a thread about how to best follow the race when being live at Le Mans...

If anybody finds a new 2013-map of Le Mans with indications where the big screens will be (rumours say that there will be new screens after Dunlop?), please post the map here (image or link).

Anybody knowing anything about Kangaroo TV available for 2013?

Thanks.

I don't know about screens, but I think we can guarantee that Kangaroo TV won't be there.

There was a big screen just past the Dunlop bridge for several years, it was very handy for us in TR camp site but it has been absent for the last couple of years

Yeah it is crying out for a screen on the infield section where the short circuit turns off. Was brutal standing there last year when the Davidson stuff kicked off and not being able to see what had happened.

More screens would be awesome.

If a slightly larger one could be put at Arnarge it would be helpful, it would be visible further along towards Indianapolis/Arnage. The one there currently requires standing quite close.

It's not a priority like the one for the former forest esses but might be helpful.

The big screens are good but you do sometimes end up watching the screen rather than the action in front of your eyes

The biggest thing I like the screens for are the references to everyone's position in the race. You sometimes have to squint to see the info but it just gives you that greater context about what you're watching.

I know you have to take in what you're watching but for me you have to know what you're watching. No way could I sit through a six-hour race, let alone the 24, without some information about who is placed where, who is in what car etc. Radio Le Mans is so integral and will give you most of that but invariably they will miss things (how could they not) and they do make mistakes. I love Hindy but he can not identify a car first time.

Screens help to fill in the gaps and while they are certainly not essential they are a big part of the race for me. There's nothing like seeing a thrilling battle for the lead, or to that point a damaged Audi, and know that it is coming towards the point where you are standing.

And lets not forget that there is 4 classes at Le Mans, sometimes several battles at once. RLM cannot cover more than one at a time, so seeing how the gaps develop on the screen helps

I'm beginning to wonder if the absolute need for big screens is slowly being overhauled by the prevalence of smartphones with reasonable data packs? In recent years I've been using one for timing and scoring pretty cheerfully, and with roaming now getting considerably more reasonable, I can see streaming periodically being perfectly feasible.

It's never going to replace the areas where a big screen adds real atmosphere (on which topic, can we have one down by the Esses again please?) but I suspect renders the likes of Kangaroo a bit of a dead end.

Yes, but the current screen does have the advantage that it spreads out the crowd, whereas before big screens, the majority congregated at either Indianapolis or Arnage: now there's a mini crowd midway between the two watching the screen.

I agree that there is a danger of watching the big screen more than the racing 20m in front of you on the track.

I am definitely going to take a notebook to this year's race to note down positions on the hourly update. It's easy to lose track of anything other than who's leading, especially through the night or when you're busy doing other stuff like eating.

I remember when the ACO used to issue hourly sheets which were available 20 minutes after the hour from the pointed hut in the old village and a copy of each hour posted on the window, not sure they do those now not seen them for many years

They did have hourly sheets available in the ACO grandstand last year; how readily available they were elsewhere, I cannot say.

I find I can balance the screens with watching the action, I mean for one you have 24 hours in just the race to take it all in. I love following a raging battle on the screen and then being able to look left and see them scream into view and past me as it continues. Adds to the experience for me.

I did once go to the 1000k at silverstone and try to keep up with a dearth of big screens and no radio and Paul Truswell I am not.

Don't worry about track positions this year. Remember we get the glorious Michelin reverse Golf Putter to help us

THE OFFICIAL MAP for LE MANS 2013

I just got an e-mail by the ACO with a link to the 2013-map showing all details about the big screens.

Oh well that shows that they have no intention of putting a screen up in the old position outside our camp site

Might be inclined to take this with a little pinch of salt - taking this at face value means all the big screens will be largely concentrated around the start-finish area, thus none at Arnage/Mulsanne/Tertre Rouge - which strikes me as unlikely.

Not, however, that this means I'm particularly optimistic about the restoration of the one by the Chapel Esses...

Normally they add the outer sections of the circuit over the top of the map but there didn't seem like a lot of room on the PDF. So yeah I wouldn't read too much into it... *he says hopefully*

That was the little leaflet that came with my tickets, just in PDF format. The leaflet was indeed pretty small and so not much room to put everything in. (one can hope)

That is all the same ones as before on the start/finish area. The big map doesn't show any tv screens on any part of the map and they aren't on the key so no need to worry that it means there won't be ones around the circuit just yet.
