You're assuming that everybody has the same ISPs, right?

Comparing the money I pay for DSL and MotorsTV (yes, I only have iptv because of it!), which mounts to €55 average per month (more than € 600 a year!!!!), a € 100 year bill for iRacing seems cheap.

That's what a i think, anyway. I'm also anti-crap mods in rFactor, yet nobody likes to drive the GP79 mod... too difficult they say LOL

but thats on TOP of your ISP bill, you can't play iracing without being online and so you have to pay for both, which is what most people are miffed about...

Nope, I can have dsl for €30 monthly. Then I pay € 25 more for MotorsTV.

BTW: A friend of mine paid € 35 for GTR-Evo, which basically, has simply a non-laser scanned (no bumps!) Nordschleife

iracing seemed very good while I played it .. but if i can't play with my friends(some which aren't prepared or can't afford to pay so much for a game) it's for nothing ..

Would you say otherwise if you could run a national league, one day per week, for example?

For guys like me, who don't give a toss abour international leagues, national leagues are the only ones we care about.

Then again, a country like Portugal, which is not too big, can easily support a league like that, because there's not too many guys racing, nor too few

Bored, so made this. By no means a good lap, and it is a botched Sears Point setup. But it's fun.

Has anyone seen an impartial review of this? Is it really Nascar 2003 or is it a real step forward? I'm tempted. The guys behind it really are major league - one is the God behind GPL and the other runs a Sprint Cup team!

You can't compare iRacing to NASCAR Racing 2003 or GPL. iRacing has a different philosophy.

GPL recreated 1967 Formula One and NASCAR Racing 2003 recreated the 2003 NASCAR Racing Series.

iRacing creates it's own "macrocosm" of racing. It provides a sophisticated environment of highly accurate vehicle & track dynamics & models. The idea is to learn your racecraft in this environment and to try to beat the next guy while maintaining a clean sheet.

iRacing is to be thought of a motor sporting entitity in its own right. The vehicles are highly accurate simulations of popular vehicles from the real world which are used in the iRacing "formula".

It is like no other. The things that do let it down are the prohibitavely expensive way they are licensing it (pay per car / track) and the inability to choose who you race against. You have to be the type of person that will set time aside to race and no mind who you race with. Its very regimented in what it allows you to do and when (no dropping straight in to races with the fastest cars) which is off putting to a lot of people.

What i did play of it i really enjoyed. The models are stunning, its physics are also top notch, but working out the costs i just couldn't justify it.

So that means that league racing is impossible? If thats the case thats a huge minus for me.

I must admit I haven't really looked into iRacing yet due to the subscription models. Its okay for MMOs, I'm not sure about sims.

Correct. Private leagues are not possible. You enter a race, and the system chooses who you race against depending on your iRating, SR, phase of the moon, tide levels, etc.

iRacing say they're "looking into" private leagues, but I don't think they're very keen, as it goes against the style of racing they wish to promote, so don't expect them to suddenly acquiesce to the wishes of the league organisers.

Concerning the engine, I've heard it's broadly "similar" to GPL and N2003, mostly because it's developed by the same people (kinda). But as has been said, the whole experience is not open ended like those sims - you have to do things the iRacing way.

We have an Aussie group doing a kind of league racing, we have nights set aside for certain combos and agree to join the same session. No guarantees we will all be together of course but in this timezone it is working well.
IRacing does contain some N2003 code but it has been tweaked/improved/added to greatly. To me this thing is so far ahead of anything else its not funny, I can understand why some people dont like it but the driving bit is by far the best.
Look through some recent back issues of AutoSimSport to get a good background story of iRacing.

Exact opposite actually. John Henry has said private leagues are something that he has wanted since day 1, they just have never had the time to do everything at once. There was a lot of discussion on it recently as staff and John himself gathered information about it. iRacing will have private leagues. We just don't know when, and how the purchasing and license system will work with it.

It is the same engines (although modified, obviously), but in saying that is like saying ARCA Sim Racing, rFactor and GTR Evolution are the same game. They are very distinct in there differences. But the main difference between NR2003 and iRacing is the track accuracy, variations in cars and the system that iRacing provides.

I'm not entirely sure the rest of his team agrees. I think private leagues would kill off the pickup racing nature of the game, er sim. I just don't see it happening without some sort of restriction. It will all have to run through the iRacing servers for starters - not something you can download and run on a private server hosted somewhere.

I'll have a go with a demo but I'm not sure I like the idea of not being able to race in leagues. If you just race against a different set of faceless people each time I can't see how it can be particularly engaging or stimulate ongoing rivalries. But maybe I'm missing something?

Having tried it, I have to say that as a sim it is definitely one of the best. However, I don't and never will agree with the way they are selling it. A friend and I worked out the other day that buying all the content alone would cost upwards of $400, plus the $120 or so yearly subscription.

There's just no way that I will ever be able to justify that much on a computer game, albeit a very accurate one, especially when you can get the likes of GTR2, GTL, Nascar 2003 and so on for a one off cost which is less than a tenth of the cost of iRacing's content, as well as getting more in the way of cars and tracks.

I just don't get it.

i concur.

Thankyou very much dave for providing the link to the free trial. I installed it on saturday and have to say i was very impressed. Only with the radical though.... Lowes road course in that is awesome fun!
I have only done 2 online races (Legends) thus far to reasonable sucess. The racing has been good and i like the way its all done.

However, it all comes down to price. Its ludicrously expensive. If i were to purchase a month, i would feel that i should be playing it all the time to justify the cost, that would take the pleasure out of it for me.

But, for out and out driveaility, its the new benchmark. Its the first sim i've had where you actually 'feel' the tyres reacting. I swear i could feel the sidewalls bouncing when they were cold. fab!
