Lots of girls
Anyone else see the article in the Times this Sunday about the all girl TVR assault "planned" for the 2004 Le Mans fronted by Amanda Stretton?
Any thoughts on this? This could be a good flag waver for the Brits IMO! |

I really dont see the point, women drivers should go to Le Mans on credit, not for some stupid idea...if they're good enough they can race with the big boys.

I thought any team could only get into Le Mans on merit and of course a lot of money. Correct me if I am wrong but is there not more teams than grid slots and some don't qualify? There was a GT race a few weeks back on Motors TV (I think) and The TVR team with the girlies driving qualified reasonably well (for women) not sure how they got on in the race as I had to go out, but in the bit I watched they kept the car on the black stuff more than a lot of the men and it was an extremely wet race.

Is this not the same team that was supposed to tackle this year's UK GT championship (although at one stage VB-H was involved). Bob Berridge appears to be the mentor

According to the article they entered the 1000km this month and finished (!) 9th in class. How many entries were there in the GT class?

I was at the 1000km at Le Mans and admit to having mixed feelings. On the one hand they qualified and raced ahead of at least 3 porsches , as well as the Ferrari 550 GT car ,if i remember correctly ,but on the other hand, seeing the sister ( brother ! ) car going so well 3-4 secs a lap quicker it seemed a pity that only 1 of the 2 cars was near the ultimate class pace.

I saw Amanda Stretton in a GT Car at Donny earlier this year partnered by Annie Templeton.
I could have lapped quicker in my Renault Scenic with the kids in the back!! |

This story has been around for a while. The girls did well in the Le Mans 1000Km, hopefully they will get an entry to 24 hours. I understand that they are going to be making a TV program about them.

I wouldn't call Bob Berridge the 'mentor' in this project. I think the phrase 'owns the team and has given the car to Amanda and two other girls to promote the team at Le Mans'
Yeah, I think that pretty much sums it up. Amanda Stretton was involved in the 'Girl Power' project at the start of this seaosn, in the CMS Viper, but they were ridiculously off the pace (consider that the front running Cup class cars were passing them, you can see what I mean!) And I don't thik V-BH was ever actually involved, her name was just mentioned as a possible third driver at the longer races. The team stopped after three rounds this year anyway. But it was meant to be a long term project to race at LM. |

I'm tired of women or "girls" as they insist on calling them, still having to trade on their gender to get any attention. I agree with those who say that if they are good enough DRIVERS, nobody will care what gender they are.
"Girls" are under 18 years of age or competing for jobs in which few articles of clothing are worn; and the only time it matters whether they are WOMEN or men is when they are trying out to be grid "girls" or Hooters "girls". A good driver is a good driver. In a race suit you can't tell anyway. |

If it encourages interest in sportscar racing and takes peoples mindset away from "the only racing is F1" mentality it should be applauded.
But picking up on Liz's point in a roundabout sort of way a Hooters Viper would work for me |

And there was me thinking of lap dancer et-al...
I agree with you Liz, they should only be there on merit, not their sex. |

as somebody said earlier in the thread Amanda and Liz won the Cup class at the Spa 100kms and if anything Fanny was faster than either of them at LM - There is no small amount of merit here.

They were indeed some seconds slower than the other TVR. But you can't compare them. They look the same but that's about it. Put Fanny Duchateau in "guys" car and I"ll bet she's within 0.5sec of their times.

My point exactly. Why are they selling them as "girls" when they are clearly capable DRIVERS? And what's this about a "guy's" car? I thought we'd settled all this "when men were men and women were girls" back in the 1970s. You mean I burned all those bras for nothing!

You think that is bad, look at what they did with Danica Patrick when she drove for Prodrive in ALMS!! Thats all you heard the whole race...danica, danica, danica...frankly she isnt that great a driver...
I think the main deal is that it is still a new concept to some people even though ladies like Shirley Muldowney have been racing and winning for over 30 years...get over it!! I would think there would be more women personally, they generally do have quite a weight advantage over men... |
