Damon should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
The Hungary Qualifying and Practice Thread.

It's been a while, but at long last we are back racing again. At point of writing I'm pleased to see that Montoya is quickest in first practice while Schumacher is way down in ninth place! So what's everyones prediction for pole? For me it'll be a close call between the Williams boys.

I'll tip a Williams pole but in the first session it is interesting to see both Toyota's up there while Alonso only managed four laps, Wilson five & Kiesa didn't get a lap.

Whats the deal with Baumgartner being quicker than Fisi and Firman this morning. I know that Fisi only did a few laps but Firman only did one less than Baumgartner. I know people will say different setup, fuel loads, tyres, etc... but it still doesn't make Firman look good.

Very suprised by the pace of Panis there, way ahead of anyone else.

Ralf for pole. He does have the one lap down I think.

Only an hour before we find out the real situation (well, two hours to the end of the session) - but for now I'm welll impressed with Toyota. A mid-field team to be still improving strongly at this stage of the season - that's an indication of doing things right... next year will be tough for BAR and Jaguar, and possibly Renault too.

It'll be interesting to see what Renault do with their engine over the winter, that'll be key for them next year.

I won't be prepared to write off any of the midfield teams for next year yet, it's a long time between now & next March.

You'r right Damon they need to improve their engine dramatically,
They have a good car but the engine is what is halting their progress to become championship contnders. If they improve their engine for next year they could even start winning races next year!!

Nothing is simple though is it? Is part of the reason for Renault's superior aerodynamic performance the wide angle engine? As I understand it, it is. Look how low the back of the sidepods are:

I totally agree Glen, but Renault have hit a bit of a brick wall as far as performance is concerned. It's all about compromise. If Renault were to go for a more orthodox engine layout I'm sure the talent in the wind tunnel would be able to work an aero package around that as well. Hell, it works for the top three teams.

Yep, agree - Renault have already decided as much too, because the new engine will be 72 degree. That might have as much to do with one engine per weekend as anything else though - and that rule may well mean that the engine power of the top three will come down to something like the level Renault currently make do with.

Looks like Montoya had a storming final sector, Kimi was quicker everywhere but there and goes third.

I'm rooting for the Toyota team at the moment - they're improving in leaps and bounds and showing some strong mettle - a good bet for points this time out.

Montoya for pole and a win barring mishaps.

I'd say those first 3 are a good indication of each teams speed.

1. 4 R.SCHUMACHER Williams BMW M 1'22"413 191.504 Km/h 3
2. 3 MONTOYA Williams BMW M 1'23"305 + 0'00"892 3

4. 6 RAIKKONEN McLaren Mercedes M 1'23"695 + 0'01"282 3

Yep keystrokes, shocking lap from Ralf
