Another point of view

Daniel Poissenot's views on the 2010 rulebook seem to have changed..........

Plus some thoughts on the new GT rules.

Gang of Four
Having proposed, and had accepted by the FIA, the concept of a GT1 class World Championship, the technical regulations for Stephane Ratel’s the Championship were not agreed at December’s World Council meeting. That means no introduction of new machinery in 2009 in preparation for a World Championship in 2010.
That is GOOD news indeed.

For closed cars equipped with an air conditioning system, the restrictors diameter above must be increased by :
- 0.5 mm for 1 restrictor,
- 0.3 mm for 2 restrictors;

which would mean the Aston can use 34mm holes, a 9.4% increase in area over the GT1 engine, giving maybe 655hp. Nice, but still no Diesel!
The Peugeot 908 does not use AC, so presumably customer cars (e.g., Lola) won't need it either.

So the Aston Martin V12 would need 2 x 33.7 mm restrictors.

Huh? It sounds as if you think a/c is a bad thing. I do not concur as GM woked out a/c that was not parasitic above the h.p. gained by the increase in restrictor diameter. Therefore increasing diver comfort, safety and acuity which in my book is a plus. Also the petrol cars do not have to worry as much about the weight of the system, so for a petrol car it seems to be a win-win situation. IMO

L.P.

A/C will always be bad for fuel economy.

I agree that it is desirable in GT cars with front engine, but in LMP cars the engine is behind the driver so there is automatically less heat in the cockpit.

so the few details of the "evo" rules that were released a couple of weeks ago (base of windscreen width, 55cm minimum heigt of bodywork etc), would these rules still be applied in 2/3 years' time?

Surely the point is, you fit air con, design the car's ventilation so that you don't need to run it and hey presto! Surely it only robs power/increases fuel consumption if you actually turn it on. As HD says, it's a win-win.

The cockpit still gets way too hot. Rember the ACO does want to monitor the cockpit air temp.

The Corvettes AC, does not run off the engine, it has a special gear off the transmission. the AC condensor is in the rear Lic plate area. So there is no degridation of fuel milage, but keeps the cockpit cooler, 70-75* F vs 130*F without.

Even 75*F in a drivers suite for over an hour is a long time.

Cool suites are great, but the ice melts cooling the water very quickly. Longest I have gotten was 45 min in 100* Plus weather.

It looks like some aspects will be applied to current cars, but any major changes that would require a new chassis are on hold for the forseable future.
