Best season of Michael Schumacher
Hi, new member here!
I'm wondering which season do you think we saw the best driving of Michael Schumacher, and why? It doesn't necessarily have to be based on whether he won the championship or not, rather based more on how well he drove; effort put in; standout performances; how many mistakes; the machinery at his disposal; standard of competition etc. Also to add, are there any seasons of his which you feel get a bit overrated in terms of his own performance, for whatever reasons? I've added a poll if people want to vote, but left out 1991 and the Mercedes years for obvious reasons. Last edited by Wml22; 23 Jan 2022 at 17:16. |

Interesting one.
It’s funny because I was watching the 1994 F1 review last night, at the time I hated schumacher and was always of the opinion that he cheated Hill out of the title. Tbh though, looking back, Schumacher was miles ahead that year, and had it not been for the utterly draconian race ban for overtaking on the warmup lap hed have had it sewn up long before the last race. I would say 94/95 for me, I’m sure there are better but in 94 he beat Aryton before his untimely passing in a car that wasn’t necessarily built around him, without the special tyres and without a defacto number 2 in Rubens |

Back in 2005-07 we thought his best title season was 2000.

It's 2022 and I will also vote 2000.
He beat peak Hakkinen and pretty much peak McLaren, and even Coulthard gave him a run for 2/3 of the season. |

1998.
That Hungary drive when he delivered the qualy laps race strategy to win it. Made the far superior Mclarens work for it and did it again in 2000 to take the title. '97 he was also very strong but blotted his copybook with the Jerez panic. Cannot consider '94 as there will always be a legality cloud hanging over Enstone, and in '95 he just embarrassed lesser drivers. I'd also rule out '02 or '04 as his car was usually over a second a lap quicker than anything else, sometimes nearly 2! 03 he fought very hard against Montoya and Kimi. Cracking season. |

While 1999 isn’t his best season for obvious reasons. It did give us Malaysia. In that one race he demonstrated he was the best number 1 and number 2! The pole lap and he was so good he could even win the race for Irvine.

92 was the emergence of a talent
93 he was still getting there 94 was always be dogged by controversy 95 he took the title despite having the second best car on the grid 96 he worked miracles in that Ferrari 97 was great until what he did in the final race 98 he did a great job, but also he attracted some unwanted attention due to his dangerous driving at times 99 who knows what would have happened if he hadn't broken his leg? I feel he drove better after he came back, than he had at the beginning of the year 00 he finally got the title, despite the struggles 01 he was at his peak and it showed 02 he walked the title, although season clouded by unnecessary team orders which did the sport some damage 03 another title, but had to work for this one. Of course there's always the controversy over the whole tyregate affair that benefitted Ferrari at a crucial time 04 most wins in a season at the time, although not quite dominant as 02 where he finished every race on the podium. There were a few less than stellar races from him 05 did his best with a tricky car. Shame his only win was a very hollow one 06 showed he still had it in him, although maybe not at his peak anymore. Retired at the right time I'll go with 01 |

welcome Wml22! coming in hot with a poll...i love it!
somewhere between 2000 season and 2003 for me. probably enjoyed the 2003 season more because of the competition level but as already mentioned by Skam85, 2000 had peak Hakkinen. first drivers title for Ferrari would be he decider for me. Y2K baby! |

Was the gap between Ferrari and Williams & McLaren in 97 and 98 really that big? He put in some great drives both years but Ferrari improved considerably in both seasons, also the McLaren was less reliable in 98 and Villeneuve/Williams made a few mistakes in 97. |
