"Wha apnin' BRSCC"
Has everyone read their latest BRN. I couldn't beleive I read that the BRSCC are turning into Max Powers official club!
I can just see Tom D with his Baseball cap on backwards and his estate car lowered shouting "Yo ma b!tch, check me ride" Shouldn't they be getting the racing right before venturing out into other fields? Just a thought? I beleive this "CRUISE" took place at Donington? Whilst we are losing race days at the Circuits, is this the reason why? I know they need to try new things, but wasn't the T-Cars a new thing???????? The more they take on, the thinner we all get spread. Like another article said, the racers along with the spectators are customers! Looks like it's not just us NW FFord boys having problems with driving standards either. |

Chris, I understood that this idea was to attract people into motorsport in an easy way - a bit like the old American cruisin' idea. (Bring your road car and see how it goes, half way between racing and track days) Low cost and lots of fun. I believe the Donington meeting last year went well and made money?
If that's right, I've no problem with it. |

I say fair play to the BRSCC, just shows they are not that jerassic afterall. If it makes them money that can in some way help us racers in the long run, then fair play. Whether we do see any benefit only time will tell.
Id rather see the boyracer brigade meeting away from public roads than hooning around towns and villages at 2 in the morning. |

I'm in full support of the BRSCC in this initiative, after all the "street racers" of today could become the track racers of the future. It shows the BRSCC is not blinkered and can look at other forms of motorsport (Yes I know many would not class this as motorsport). If through events like this we can get the youngsters to appreciate their cars, drive them at speed away from the public roads, and instill a sence of awareness then all credit to the BRSCC.
Many of the so called 'chavs' and 'scallywags' have cars who's models are represented in the BTCC and often arrange for 'meets' at tracks hosting a local round. These boys and girls are the racers/marshals/spectators of the future and we should do everything to encourage them to race tracks and race meetings. |

With regard to BRN they had to find to find 4 pages content to replace the regular Zip content.

He's right though. BRN is looking decidedly thin nowadays. It was better when it was in 'newsletter' format, rather than today's 'magazine' format.
What made me chuckle was Steve Skinner's (editor) column at the front of the mag. He was scathing about the cruising idea (calling it 'cringe', rather than 'cruise'), and made a good point that there was a competition held at Donington Park for the 'loudest stereo' - the winner metering 134db - which was apparently acceptable at 10pm, whereas quieter motor racing has to stop at 6pm or before at most circuits.. Skinner also said "Would it not be far more preferable that the Club put all of its energies, expertise and resources into trying to get its core business right? Perhaps I'm just too old for raves or cruises, but as a member said to me recently: 'The BRSCC has a responsibility to get its house back in order before dabbling in real estate!' " - This is the editor of the BRSCC's official magazine calling. Perhaps they should listen..? |

Surprising the BRSCC's (doubtlessly paid) editor critices the club in it's own magazine?
If the BRSCC want to save money, the first thing they should do is drastically downscale BRN to make it smaller, less glosser and much cheaper. If people want a professional publication buy Autosport, BRN should be a club newsletter IMO. |

Going back to an earlier point, if the 'cruise' made money for the BRSCC then what's the problem? Maybe Steve Skinner doesn't think the younger people who enjoy 'cruises' and who have a healthy interest in cars should be a part of the BRSCC?
Personally I embrace the idea. It's not to my taste but I feel it's a step in the right direction in so far as it is targeting an as yet untouched part of the community. We have to stop being insular and look to other areas to increase membership. |

I don't think this is a new thing for the BRSCC, While attending another exhibition at the NEC in 2000, i nipped into the Max power show (I'm not proud but i had free tickets) & while there i recognised a BRSCC Clerk of the course running their live arena with the assistance of a few other BRSCC attired officials. The only worry with these things is that clubs supposably make more money out of these events rather than running races, not sure how, i can't justify paying any more for enrty fees

Just to clear up a small point here. Bernard Coterell who is the chairman of the BRSCC and also Clerk of the Course, works for Haymarket Exhibitions which explains why you see him at these do's. I suspect the club get a few favours given Bernards position so don't knock it!
The Marshals Club get a free stand at the NEC courtesy of Bernard for which we are extremely grateful. |

Guys, why not write your own copy for your particular series? I do it sometimes for the marshals and it gets published!

[B]Funny - I race in a BRSCC championship, but can't remember when it last featured in BRN. At last. nail on the head. Don't the BRSCC have enough Championships to be contending with than shifting their efforts to other areas. Steve S's points were spot on. Get what we have sorted first. I'm sorry, but whichever way you cut it, these Cruises are a way of making a quick buck. I've seen these meetings first hand and the whole point of these cruises is to be anarchic. You can't keep these things under control, that's the fun for most of the attendees. And to think of most of these people as future racers, well I think that's gonna be the day I hang my helmet up. Don't get me wrong, I'm not taring them all with the same brush, but for most it's not about cars and speed. It's about image. This is where the BRSCC are going wrong with this. There is racing series to be dealt with first. Guys that have been "Customers" for many many years with the level of service they receive getting worse by the day. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but in '96, a race day for a Formula Ford at Oulton was £103 and we got to race the full circuit nearly every meeting. Nearly 8 years on and the entry fee is £165 and we more often than not race the Fosters circuit. On top of this, we have dwindling marshal numbers, poor observing (which was highlighted in BRN)and now, less tickets per competitor. I know they BRSCC are trying, but they could try harder if they were not trying to make a quick buck by appeasing the Max Power kids. I mean, come on, the average age of these kids is 18. How do you expect to coax them into racing when they spend any spare cash on their beloved toys. Next, we'll be having meetings for the Scooter brigade!!!!!!!!! THE BRSCC (BRITISH RACING AND SPORTS CAR CLUB) IS A RACING CLUB. CRUISES ARE NOT RACING! |

Oh and while were on the subject of BRN, can we have a letters page. That would make some good reading?

Walshy,
I agree about the letters page although they do publish letters if you send them to Mr Skinner. I missed the bit about poor Observing and will have a read later but dwindling marshal numbers has been going on for over 10 years and IS being addressed I promise you. I guess we will have to agree to disagree on the cruise though, but hey, thats what forums like this are for, to promote discussion I look forward to meeting many of you guys at the FF Festival later in the year and feel a beer in the Kentagon coming on |

Cruising - if it brings in new members who may progress to race/marshall/officiate and if it brings in cash, what's wrong with it? You have to move with the times.

Mr.Green-are you buying then? Mind you-we're not sure what the date is going to be now. I hope Mandy sorts out a discount for you as there will now be a large amount of people hanging around "The Priest Catcher" in October!!
