Has anyone got any photos of the new Roof Vents that are going to manadatory? They were trialled in the HPDC series.

So do these roof vents flood the innards of a Supercar when it rains, or is there some well-placed ducting involved?
Every time you see a WRC car equipped with vents fly thru a water splash, the driver and navigator end up a little wetter than you ,may have expected. Given the high end electronics aboard a Supercar, and the placement in the passenger seat, and the switchgear hanging on the dashboard... I wouldnt have thought water would be very conducive to good reliability in these components.... |

Can not really make a comment on your question GTR, but I find out that the story I read was on the v8supertaxi web site.
Going on what it said it will be conected to the air ducts. |

Wonder if they will look like these..they cut about 50F from the Cabin temperature in a GT1 (Trans-Am) car.

I thought I read somewhere that they were specifically NOT like the ones used in WRC. Can't find where it was though - damn this feeble memory.

I talked to Gerre Payvis who made the "Roof Louvres" for his GT1 car and he said, they took out at least 50F out of the Cabin.
The Ford Roof Vents, look more like they are forcing(hottish) air in, rather than taking it out? |

Why not just wind down a window?

HRT has been testing them as well on the PR2 car since the start of the year. Probably a ford Team as well.

Why not just mandate air-con?

Air con takes away power from the engine, and the units they used that were independant of the engine were too heavy.

Imagine what would've happened in the old days with all this talk of aero? The GTHO's wouln't have been the same with the quarter vent flipper windows nailed shut... Peter Brock wouldn't be able to drive around with his elbow on the sill... The Captain wouldn't be able to throw Cherry Ripes at the marshalls... SOunds like trying to reinvent the wheel... Well alright, I'll concede, in the interests of channeling CLEAN air into the cab, but they've spent an awful lot of time working out ways to stop air getting in, in the interests of aero, and now they want to hack a hole in the roof? |

but would it be forcing air in, or letting it out?
that porsche one would barely effect aero at all. And let the hot air out. |

That was the main thing that I always that Lowndes was always quick at HRT and quick in general. He is 1 of only few people who normally race all day with the windows shut and have a full aero car. Im sure the open window would cause way to much drag these days. |

Okay, I can understand the vents to let air in but that means fumes would also get inside. Surely it would also necessitate vents at the rear to let the air flow through properly.
I mentioned air-con earlier and Jason Hill said units added to vehicle weight and robbed power. Correct, but if we are talking parity then surely wweight and power become non-issues because all the cars would still weigh the same and develop similar amounts of kilowatts and torque.. Back in the 70s people reckoned Bob Jane was mad for running power steering on his Camaro. The stopped laughing when he kicked their butts and now no self-respecting V8 Supercar driver would run without it. What I'm getting at here is that if the drivers, teams, AVESCO and CAMS are really concerned about car comfort levels then they should just make the changes and be damned. With the roof vents I can see the next arguments centring around "vent aero" advantages! |

Would it be possible to run air-con units that only operated under braking or deceleration?

It would make more sense to run an air conditioner running solely on electrical power rather than running a gas compressor from the engine... but the enemy to this is of course weight....
