My Tracks Challenge: Kyalami
Your challenge is too combine the two Kyalami circuits into one. I know the old one isn't there anymore but for dreamer's sake - we'll pretend it is!
Here, is my effort! --- Current Geography So I have merged the two, first off - to demonstrate the respective positions of the two circuits I have drawn up this circuit-on-circuit overlay; --- Grand Prix Circuit My design - uses the original startline, Crowthorne, Barbecue, Clubhouse, Esses, Leeukop and The Kink sections, whilst also incorporating elements of the newer circuit. I'll talk you through a lap. They start on a resurfaced start/finish straight on the old circuit. Before taking the original Crowthorne and Barbecue bends. Following that they feign left off the existing approach towards Sunset - continuing flat towards a new left hander which would be good for overtaking. There is then another slow right hander, leading onto the new track's S/F straight - although now it would be ran in the opposite direction. After the next hairpin, the Sunset kink (Sunset is the point of the original Sunset corner) back onto the straight on the approach upto Clubhouse - which with being approached with a right hand angle instead of a left, provides good passing opportunities. It then follows the original Esses and Leeukop bends. --- National (North) Circuit I have created a National circuit resembling the original circuit. --- Club (South) Circuit And a club circuit, using the newer start/finish. It would run in the opposite direction to that the current circuit takes. So it would use the hairpin and then turn off at Sunset. --- New Geography This overlay shows how the new design would relate to the original circuits. --- Enjoy! PAUL |

Well, I let my mind run and came up with a weird figure-of-eight type circuit with two shorter alternatives. I'm actually quite pleased with my full circuit as it brings out the best in both Kyalamis.

That would all be very nice... hadn't the old track been used for housing...

Crap. That should teach me to read the stuff and not just look at the pictures.

While we're talking about Kyalami, could someone post some period ground-level shots of the old course, or even just some shots of action on the newer course? I've only seen like three photos of action on the course, and they weren't of the sort to really give me a sense of the circuit. From what I understand, the old track had one heck of a hill on the main straight.

Don't worry, the image quality is good enough for me to see what I'm looking for. Thanks.
