Silverstone comes to Le Mans
If you go to Google Earth and find the circuit, then locate the public road that joins the Porsche curves to the Mulsanne Straight, you'll see four football pitches just south of that road, right in the centre of the circuit.
Just south of those pitches is what looks like an office or factory and in the garden is Silverstone Circuit. The co-ordinates are 47.56.04N and 0.13.25E It's not 1st April. I'm stone cold sober. Can anyone (a tenther who lives locally perhaps) tell us what it is and why it's there? |

Looks like a RC car track, not a bad replica either. Would be better if it was the "old" Silverstone though.

I think it is a pond or lake - if you look at the 'green' centre, you can see where it slopes down into the 'green' - a few catches of light in the middle suggest the surface is reflective.

Now I've seen it at home on a decent monitor, you can see the liner at the bottom! Still looks like its going to be a RC track though but could just be an ornamental pond with a path round it.

It's amazing what you can see from the air, I do some aerial photography as a hobby, using a radio controlled glider, the results are quite impressive. I would love to film around the circuit at various points.
I might try and take it down this year and film over some of the campsites (Gendarmerie permitting), it all depends on how much luggage I can carry onboard the Eurostar and through Paris onto the TGV. |

I wonder if there's a back garden in Silverstone Village that has a pond shaped like the Le Mans circuit?

Well i don't have a pond, but i did draw the le mans track in chalk on my patio for my 2 little boys to race their cars on last summer. If google Earth was filming at the time, then yes, approx 1/4 of a mile from Copse you would have seen the Le mans track. I will be doing the same again this year of course, so if " Gilles lives ! " wants to fly that plane over my house and take some pics next time he comes to silverstone we could arrange it.

We also laid out their Scalextric track on the rear lawn (Porsche 956/962 and red Jaguar XJR), but the plastic would become very soft in summer sunshine. Both boys now grown up and I'm looking forward to Grandad's first visit with his grandson - hopefully in 2010. Grandson will be at his first race meeting tomorrow - HSCC at.......Silverstone |

I had a plane with me last year on our Friday afternoon tour of the circuit , but I had impatient friends with me who wanted to get into the town ASAP, so I didn't get around to taking any aerial pictures, if I can find away of transporting the model down I'll definitely fly this year.
I'll bring the plane up to Silverstone for the LMS race and try and catch LC2guy's house, so have those Le Mans track drawings ready |
