Well yes. This is the 2021 thread, not the 2001.

Some were but some had to bring sponsorship to the party. The peak of Super Touring lasted a couple of seasons.

Theres probably 12-14 current BTCC drivers who make a living from their racing which is a similiar amount to the Super Touring days.

We lost a couple of those due to Covid this season but its still a championship where you can earn a living if you're any good.

They may not "get a cheque" from a manufacturer but there's good opportunities for hard working people?

This situation has been happening for at least 6-7 seasons now so you could argue that current BTCC drivers are the most "professional"?

I thought it would be rather something like 2 to 4 guys like Turkington and Neal

but it's a bit of sad affair when the likes Austin or AJ has no seat and we have some grid fillers like Neate who have "bigger pocket than talent"

Could be worse, as HARD are literally raffling off one of the VWs. £20 a ticket.

why not, they are building new cars and nobody is going to pay full price for one of the vw's, raffle for 20 quid a pop will get lots of folk buying a ticket for the heck of it... good trackday toy or club racer for the winner or even flog it on after another raffle.

HARD aren't really raffling off the VW. It's just to bait people into funding them. Made them £820 so far.

OK...technically the VW could be raffled off, but it requires every single one of the 5000 tickets to be bought at £20 a piece. Which a) won't happen and b) if it did, they'd have raised £100,000 which is far in excess of what the cars worth anyway.

Gilham tried that with the S2000 Vectra several years ago. That all went quiet after a while.

Is there a winner if they don’t sell 5,000? And what do you win in that situation?

Yes. 70% of the money donated. So HARD will make 30% profit, £354 raised so far.

Thanks. Wondered how these things work.

Better to win if they sell 4,999 tickets than 5,000

If all the tickets are sold it will make a massive amount of cash. How do we have the comfort of knowing the “ draw” was legit ?

They won’t want to sell all the tickets. Better to sell less and get your 30% margin.

Sounds suspiciously like the occasional house raffles that I see. 99% of the time they are illegitimate luring the gullible in. Small print always allows a substitute prize if less than x% of tickets sold. Instead of a house you'll snag a luxury house for a hamster maybe.

Tony's intentions are probably good.

There are some rules around this type of promotion. It's not strictly a raffle, there has to be a test of skill involved, so to enter you need to answer a quiz question. It's a HARD question, but not a hard question - Who is Managing Director at Team HARD. Racing?

There also has to be an option for a free entry, which is cunningly disguised as white text on a white background! Just get 5000 of your closest friends to send in a postcard to ensure all the tickets are taken.

You post such utter ******** at times. Whilst there may yet be some miracle, all indications are that 2021 will be a very tough season for the BTCC. You will note that there is, to date, not a single entry announced for next season yet. Of course the usually late finish of this year plays a part, but there are huge uncertainities for next season. Not every entry that appeared this year is sustainable should the hospitality side of things remain closed. In all likelihood next season will see a weaker entry than this.

Whilst I agree next year will be a struggle, Cammish signed a 2 year deal at Honda last year, and I think Plato is set at PMR, so we have a few entries.

As you say, nothing to say the money won't be there for them though...

How will Plato be able to race next year if he couldn't make this year work. When they stated they'd be back for 2021 that was very much with the assumption that things would be back to normal with full crowds and hospitality.

If that happens, ushering Plato into a quiet retirement without ITV fawning all over him any more will be one of the few positives of the corona virus

Nothing announced. There have been quite a few over the last year or 2 though (BMW, Infiniti, Toyota, Hyundai, Ford). I would be surprised if there were any changes to the Vauxhall or Honda. Which only leaves the AMD/TPC fleet, Mercedes and the 2 1-series. Morgan has got some decent pace in recent rounds from the Merc so I can't see that being replaced just yet. Also factor in that the full details around the 2022 hybrid intro haven't been finalised, so it would make sense to hold out before building a new car.
