The Norma has a 3 litre Honda Vtec 4 pot with a good size turbo.
The design and construction is out of this world, everything looks perfect.
I think it is prepped by Tom New, a past top driver, and engineers the current British hillclimb Champs car.

I was way in front of the Zolfe, but it was that car's first meeting.

Surely must be worth buying a set of wets? Expensive, I know, but cheaper than stuffing the car and have a big repair bill.

Not just the tyres sadly, £1250 to start with, but a set of wheels too that suit the old March F2 rear hubs that are centre lock.
Set of MB wheels will be about £3500.

Added to that is getting them to/from the paddock.
The trudge of getting stuff/kitchen sink back to the tow car on a Sunday afternoon would be too much.

Taking a slow run and loosing points is the alternative.

In the Championship you can drop 2 of the worst scores, 7 events from 9 count, so you hope the wet ones can be dropped and that there are only 2 wet events.

I'm not alone in this, not everyone has wets, just most, but the wets tend to be old and degraded.

Best compromise is to have the slicks 'lightly' grooved to a wet pattern. You loose some rubber surface in the dry, but not that much. Have tried this in the past but did not seem effective.

Surprised to see a turbocharged 3 liter in a Norma tho. The best naturally aspirated 2 liter Hondas were in the region of 300 bhp when not restricted at 8K rpm.

Agreed, brilliant desing and excellent construction, when you think that Norbert Santos started from scratch with a limited budget. Pro is it has some ground effect, con its wide.

Are you allowed to use a rubber softener as they use in karting? It stinks/schmekts in the trunk of the tow car -not that much compared to some gearbox oils as the bloomy Motul- but it works.

Oooh Gérard, that's provocative - no we're not allowed tyre softener in karting!

It's not allowed in any MSUK motor sport AFAIK. We're not even allowed to warm tyres up on the start line these days.

Yes, no artificial tyre treatments allowed. Tyres (driven) by good old 'dump the clutch' wheel spin get a bit of heat, but not much.

I say the Normas' engine is 3 litre because the program said so.

Big car mind.

Asked a few questions yesterday about tyre supply, and it seems nothing is really know, overall supply down to sizes and then what you can get late in the year.

All in the lap of the Gods!

Shelsley Walsh this weekend for a round of the Midland Championship. I think there are just 2 of us there, but a new comer to the class has arrived in the form of George in a Cosworth YB engined Mk2 Escort, but can't see him on the entry list, but he may have squeezed in, won't know till Saturday.

Weather forcast is evil.
Shelsly is hard work in the dry and silly in the wet on slicks, so could be at the bottom of the pile by Sunday evening!
Still will get 2 points.

Best bit is we are under a garage roof, so out of the rain when parked up.

Shame, was looking forward to going well.

Shelsely Walsh, Saturday and wet wet wet.
What a miserable day we had.

I am on my own in the class, so assuming I reach to top of the hill tomorrow, just one point per run to count, so 2 points max.
A lot of effort for 2 points!

Shelsley garages were errected when a mMorris Minor was a BIG CAR, so today all of them feel and are very tight especially when you have bought 90% of a garage too.

Reluctantly, we did one run to qualify today, the track was evil, and we had a message from the hill marshals the track was very slippy.
So, just cruised up to remember how the hill goes and back to the paddock.

The car now looks like it has been on a rally cross, and will take all of next Monday to clean the car down.

Still, it ran well after I flooded it getting started (again) and with the body washed down looks pristine!

Should be dry and overcast tomorrow.
Practice again in the morning, 2 race runs later.

Ran a cruising 47 second run instead of my usual 32's.

Flooded? You mean too rich? Did you carefully listen to the last video you posted? The "voice" is not really clear when exiting an hairpin. So may be too rich in the low end or cold spark plugs.

The engine I feel is not at it's best, going to check the ignition tomorrow.

Sunday has been a nice sunny warm day, we had one practice and 2 timed runs.

It is oddly dis-spiriting to be alone in the class, but the 2 timed runs were a bit 'miserable @
33.42 and 2.14 start, and 33.40 and 2.2 start. Way off my pb of 31.51.

Have to say my heart was not in it this weekend, but gathered 2 more Championship points.

Car is absolutely filthy but have a month to clean and check it through before we are back to Shelsley again on the 3/4 June.

Hope my mojo will return.

Waiting to return off the top of Shelsley, cramped!

No, cleaned the car to near death and pulled the top leads off-back on and fired the engine up.
Ran as sweet as can be.

My frame of mind was not good over the weekend, Mr Grumpy would sum it up.

Car now all wrapped up to keep the slicks dark and cool and the garage dust off all my hard work.

I get sent pictures of this car from several who are signed-on as Photographers at these events and thus get so great advantage points to shoot from.

It is a nice pic, bold colour against the dark track (wet) and the red rumble stip. Rob takes a mean pic!

Here is another sent, going up the hill this time, wet run.

Oddly, the provisional entry list has arrived for next Shelsley meeting in the Championship, 3/4th June.

All back to 'class normal' as the meeting is the British and Midland Championship rounds together.
Thus i have the Norma, Mike Luck in the Zolfe (undoubtedly modified), father and son drivers in the 7 litre Pilbeam and the dark horse, George, in his flying Mk2 Escort driven so hard everywhere.

Amongst that lot I will be 2nd in class at best, probably 3/4th, could be worse!

Do hope it is dry. Do hope it is dry.

Dry. Sunny and partly cloudy. Rather cold (20/22° C) given we're in June. Have fun!

NO RAIN!
Bliss.
Going to be tough and a bit odd.

The Norma will take the class and there is a Mk2 Escort in the class too. George is a fearless driver which helps at Shelsley so he is a good contender for 2nd.

I expect the Zolfe will noe have lots of tweeks to the suspension from the road car it was designed to be, so mike will be keen to score.
The 7 lire Pilbeam does well on this steep hill, so more pressure!

If I can take 3rd I will be happy and about the best I can expect.

Keep on getting pictures sent to me of the car, so here are a few from the Prescott meeting.
First 2 (of many) taken by a friend's son, Charlie Powell, the 3rd one appeared on facebook.

Back to Shelsley Walsh this weekend, a full National and Midland Championship event, lots to sort out and a good opportunity to get some needed points.
6 drivers in the class.
Shelsley need BHP big time, it is so steep, and accurate gear changes from me...

3 practice runs today, practice and 2 race runs tomorrow. Hill was hot and dusty, but most went for it with a few frights along the way, all of us just off our personal bests.

My pb is 31.58 and has stood for some years on the old engine.
Best today was 32.47 and 2.14 start, 100 mph over the line.

As expected, the NORMA was in first place every run, me second, but the 7 litre Pilbeam hot on my heels.

On my 3rd practice, the car was humming well, even changed from 3rd to 2nd well at the right time, right place. Cracked on through the Esses and coming out the engine dropped to 5 cylinders all along the finishing straight.

My heart sank as it felt like it really was in trouble. Got parked up at the top and switched off, despondent and worried!

Fired straight up on the hill and drove down coasting in 2nd a dream...

I suspected sparks or fuel. The pump had been buzzing it's head off for a while, so i suspected fuel, simplest thing to check first.

Looked at the glass see-through filter and looked full of debris.

Removed and cleaned of hard dry debris, back in and the pump sounded right and the engine did too.

The material in the tank is breaking down (there since 1978) and this is the souce.

Need to think of a way to remove this old 'anti-slosh' material and re-fill with something modern. Will keep cleaning the filter in the meantime.

That cylinder loss took some time away and the speed over the finish line was 85 mph instead of 100 mph, so the Pilbeam 'just' got ahead!!

Hoping all will be back to normal for tomorrow when it counts.

Mike in his Zolfe GT had a bad morning (duff battery) but recovered to run well this afternoon.

Plan is 2nd or third tomorrow on both runs.

I think there is some afternoon live stream on YouTube.

What a day!

The fuel was the issue from yesterday, the car ran 100% today.
I did notice that the throttle pedal was out of normal position, the cable had slipped about 6mm so re-adjusted that for '110%' throttle!
I think it had been like that since the rolling road session...

So, 3 runs.
1st was a practice which went well, fuel thing sorted, gear change sorted , driver's head in gear, sorted! Everyone but the NORMA well behind me including the big Pilbeam.

Plan for the 2 timed runs was simple. Keep all the others behind me while trying to reduce the pace of the fabulous NORMA, oh my, what a car it is.

Only 40 years between the chassis ages. Learnt the drive does all the prep himself, maintains it all etc, so hats -off to him.

Second was to cut my personal best time of 31.58 which has stood for some time dueling with someone in the class years ago.

I knew where my weakness' were.

Coming into the bottom of the hill too hot, coming into the bottom Esse too slow, passing through the bottom and top esses too slow. Oh, and a gear change coming into the bottom esse.
Lots to go at....

It came together.

It all sorted itself out and on the first timed run came second (6 points) to the hot NORMA and on the second run 2nd again with a PB! (31.08)

The final run was best start, best speeds, best gear changes and best result.

I am please; the results, the 12 championship points, the car running so well and getting home in one piece.

Just so nice.

Next up is a midland meeting at my favorite hill, Loton Park close to Wales next weekend.
Just Mike and I in the class, such a different hill, long with lots of bends, non of a simple nature, I love it there and the BBC say the weather will be dry and warm, so must be right.
That will do.

Thus, I have met my tasks set out by MG David!

What a great little car this is.

One of these days I must come and speccy live, so to speak. Don't know when that might be, you have to keep going til then
I was helping out with a couple of mates in CSCC Swinging Sixties at Brands today; wall-to-wall sun and warmth - no better place to be on a day like this than at a motorsport venue
