Who's this new Aussie driver?

Read something on Rob Nguygen? in the paper. An up and coming Aus driver that's racing F3000 alongside Ryan Briscoe this year.
Supposedly, in his first test with the 'Ginzhani Team' he was a second quicker than the regular driver. Doesn't that team have a representative on this forum? Any idea if he is that good?

Rob Nugyen -first sat in a racing car in November 2000, a Formula Opel car. Did a season of Formula VW in Germany in 2001 finishing 5th overall, with a pole position in only his 3rd race. Tested a F3000 car with Team Ginzhani at the end of the year and was 7/10ths faster than the regular driver and only 1/10th off the team's lap record there.

Crikey! Top job Rob! Thanks for the info Cos, and thanks Drexel this thread, its good that they are not all argument debate ones.

Hope Rob has Briscoe's luck with a test in F1 in the near future.

Thing is, if he does get into F1 anytime soon, he'll surely be the most inexperienced driver...*every* other driver has done karting at some point.

I still say karting's overrated, as is the ladder system to begin with. You can't teach natural talent.

And those who have the natural talent usually climb the ladder 2 or 3 rungs or more at a time.

Kimi as an example. Although he only had what, 23 F Renault races, I think he won 13, didn't he? Learning your racecraft is important, but some drivers are very quick studies.

What is this fellows name? Nugyen or Nguygen?

Good luck to him.

Hey djb, I saw that pic of Valentino kneeling by his bike again, he was, apparently, engraving his name in the side!
So much for praying!!

i'd really love it if nguyen gets into F1 before the "aussie" golden boy briscoe.
motorsport in australia is still very much a boys own club.

I don't think Rob has ever actually raced in Australia. As far as I know, the Australian authorities are still scratching their heads as to who he is and what he's raced. From what I've read and heard, he is quick, and a fast learner (something he shares with his F3000 compatriot).

As a kart racer from way back, I tend to think it is a wonderful way of learning about racing, however I personally don't think it is essential. Karts are so different to cars, and if you have the natural talent, then I think it's quite possible to be successful anyway.

Go Rob!

Mark Webber of course and Ryan Briscoe. Ryan and Rob are both very talented guys, what I've heard from them. Hopefully we can see good things from both this year in F3000. Down Under has some good drivers for the future.

Not to mention James Courtney and Will Davison.

James is favourite to win the Brit F3 title this year, and Will has been quite impressive in his first testing sessions in Brit Formula Renault.

Tanalised- I hereby claim Scott Dixon in the name of Australia. I think it's best if we don't mention this to him, Let's just suprise him at the Gold Coast this year....I'll print up a official "Practically an Australian Certificate" and pass it on to him.

Seriously though I didn't know about the Qld connection, but through the years we have always claimed your best and brightest.....Russell Crowe, Neil Finn etc

The aussies are doing quite well all over the place, good luck to all of them this year.
And the funny thing about Nygunen, i read that he parents organised the Formula opel drive as a gift for him after he done well studying.

Yep,read about him recently-on the web somewhere. He's a child of some 'boat people 'imigrants from the vietnam war apparently. His first go in a racecar was indeed the gift of the F opel drive but i'm sure it was only a track day kind of thing, not a full season or anything. He hasen't flogged all the team mates he's been up against so far-But he seams to be WELL ahead of the average.Good to see!!!
Hey,does anyone know what Kimi raikonen did before his '23 car races'?It allways bugs me that F1 in particular completely ignores a racers experience on bikes or rally for example-these disciplines could be said to require more skill than F1.In fact the ONLY part of f1 that is difficult is the huge forces invoved on the body.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but Rob doesn't partner Briscoe. Unless I missed something here, like you mean they are in same series.

the thing that irritates me is when webber was doing no racing one year, i think it was 98 or 99, the aussie press couldnt get enough of him. in the same year we had an entrant in F3000 whose name was anrej pavicevic {i hope i got that right}, who got absolutely no press or support.
