The jist of the Tobacco advertising settlement allows Tobacco companies to sponsor 1 team per year within the U.S.

As Team Penske in CART is sponsored by Marlboro, Ferrari were not able to display Marlboro decals. Benson and Hedges are owned by the same company which sponsrs Team KOOL Green, (hence the name), I'm confused as to why BAT livery was allowed on the BAR's as those two companies have merged.

West is a German Company and does not even sell in the States.

That's a very valid point, EERO. I wonder why the BARs didn't have their title sponsor's logos removed. If Jordan and Ferrari had to, due to - as you say - that bizzare US law, it makes you question why BAR ran in full livery...

That bizzare law is so incredible that, even if the CART teams want to enter the Indy 500 next season, (supposing they have cigarette sponsorship) they'll have to remove it, because - even though it's the same team - it's a different category. Only in America...

Actually the settlement does not require the tobacco companies to sponsor only one team, but only one sporting event.

Penske are supported by Marlboro, thus the blank Ferraris.

Reemstma does not sell tobacco in the US and thus West is not held under this agreement.

I think BAR and BAT got away with it because of corporate identity limitations. Are Benson & Hedges or Lucky Strikes available in the US?

KC, as an ex-smoker who still frequents the 7-11, I can say "yes".
