The best sounding Le Mans car ever!

hiya people and heres another thread for you all to have fun with lol,

i thought i would make a thread on what you all think is the best sounding car to ever do the great race, doesnt matter what year it is could be say the pescarolo from 2006 or the toyota GT1 from 1998 or the ford GT40 from 1969

here are my favorites

2005 dallara LMP judd GV4 V10 rollcentre racing, i was on the hangar straight and this thing was accelarating down the hangar straight the noise was almost sexual lol

audi R8 oreca 2005, okay it was a little bit on the quiet side this car but it did sound very nice when it was accelarating out of the chicane towards bridge corner

ferrari 550M GT, this car hurt's my ears and thats a good thing i like to be deafened especially by this cars V12 engine lol

zytek motorsport 2005 zytek 04S, i can remember this thing blasting through bridge corner and changing gear it was amazing the noise this car made is the on thing i will remember for my whole life

mercedes CLR 1999, oh no i just had a trouser accident

mazda 787B 1991, mmmmmmm yummy lol

chevron B16, 1 word wow or my ears are making love lol

so you know what i like sound wise so post your favorite sounding cars there are a lot more i like such as the mecachrome V8 and the TVR T400R and lister storm and more as well.

P.S audi R10 and caterpillar lola dont count that will stop the greenies lol

This has been done a billion times before, dj, but we all love it.
I think it should be done annually.
The Matra comes up as No.1, with the Mazda 787b, Panoz, Corvette and McLaren ranking near the top.

I like to give a mention to the 2000 Cadillac LMP, and agree with the 1999 Mercedes CLR. The Ferrari 333 SP was delightful, and the McLaren F1 GTR of 1995, 1996, and 1997, and 2000 BMW LMR, all sounded great (with subtle differences.)

Whack a poll on this thread and I'd have to say, the Matra.

It's like a Panoz V8 at lower rpms, and Ferrari 333 SP at higher rpms. In the middle it has some of the raucous snarling roar of the McLaren. Awesome.

-Mazda 787B
-McF1 GTR
-Panoz GTR
-Ferrari 333SP
-Any Judd GV4 powered car

and for me a special mention goes to the Toyota GT ONE. Allthough it's TT V8 didn't really sound hairraising, the bengs and booms and crackles comming from it's exhausts on the overrun, I will never forget!

Regretably,I haven't had the pleasure of ever hearing a Matra V12. I visited Le Mans Classic two times now and I've missed the Matra's there very much.
Strange, such a big French classic race but no Matra's to be seen running...

How odd there was no 2005 sound thread:
Best Sounding Le Mans car!
Best sounding engine from a le mans car. can be from any era, full stop!

V12 Jaguar. It reassuringly shook the ground through the night.

The Matra is before my time, but the recording I heard are great.
A 512S sounds good too, especially if they start it as you are innocently walking past.

I don't think the Mazda sound is a nice sound at all. Impressive, but quite unpleasent.

Yes I like this too. A Smart Roadster sounds a little like that too when you are in it! (A credit to the Roadster not a negative for the Porsche). It made me smile.

Of the big rumblers I always had a soft spot for the Marcos LM600. However, of the modern cars I guess that prize goes to the Panoz Esperante.

I do like the Judd-powered prototypes, although the Pescarolo was a lot "softer" with it's engine note, and I generally preferred the higher revving GV4.

I've also gotta mention the Lister Storm. As a big fan of the car and indeed the whole Lister team, I loved it's Jaguar V12. I also can't believe nobody has yet mentioned the Lamborghini Murcielago. That's an incredible noise, the higher-pitched "echo"-like sound which grows as it moves further into the distance is something I'll not forget in a hurry. I do hope we see more of the car (and I'm a little bit disheartened that it won't feature at Donington).

Of the oldies, well, I can't really say much for them - I like some of them but haven't really been able to see much at a circuit. I did like the Chevron B16, though, and I'm told the Ferrari P4's and early 512's are great too.

If pushed, what would I pick as my favourite? Difficult, but at the minute I'd actually have to say the Lambo...

The infamous Mercedes CLK GT1 V8. An old school muscle car V8 noise.

McLaren F1 GTR - seriously meaty V12 sound, and such a great car as well.

Marcos LM600 - just watch the 'Sports Car In-Car Experience' DVD/Video from Duke, and listen to when he stamps on the gas at the start of the race at Spa: the noise is pure sex, and is so loud it makes the on-board camera go funny!

One that I'll remember is the Morgan a few years ago, waking up in the campsite behind the marshals post on the mulsanne 2nd chicane at 1am in total darkness and being able to pick that one car out of all the cars screaming along was a bit special (especially to realise that it was still running at that time in the race!)

Try Matrasport.dk in the galleries section, there are a number of sound files.

I'm still waiting for the poll to be added. Trying to work out whether to go for the matra or the BMW in the McLaren...

For the poll it looks like you need to add:

Porcshe 917
Jaguar XJR V12
McLaren F1 GTR
Panoz Elan V8
Matra V12
Ferrari 512
Mercedes CLR V8
Mazda 787B
Judd GV4
Ferrari 333 SP V12

that's any easy one.......Jag XJR with the V12.
God I remember the sound of them rumbling around Daytona battling the Porsche 962s.
If not Jag, then definately the Panoz. The Mazda would make my ears and eyes bleed as it SCREEEEEEEEEECHED its way around Daytona.

Some day maybe we'll get real sportcars back for the 24h. What a way to start the season: Daytona in Feb, and Sebring in March. Ah the joy of living in Florida

In 1998 and 1999 Mercedes ran at Le Mans with a cross-plane crank 6-litre V8, so it was a real US-style soundtrack. In 1998 FIA-GT they ran the CLK-LM with a 5-litre flat-plane crank V8, a completely different noise altogether (and not as pleasing to the ear).

Interesting. I always thought a flat-plane was the way to go in racing.

They must have thought that less vibrations of the cross/multi plane would be beneficial over the 24 hour race.

Wasn't there some restrictor advantages in running a pushrod engine as well?

(or am I getting confused with the CART engine Ilmor built for Mercedes just for the Indy500 one year?)

My top 3 would be .....

Courage C60 Judd V10 GV4
Jaguar XJR-12 7.3L V12 Number 34 , with the broken exhaust manifold
Riley & Scott Oldsmobile V8

That Jag had a rather husky sound to it .

Thats it for my LMP 1

Oh ..... and a Ferrari 550 and Saleen S7R for GT1 .

Porsche 911 GT3R ..... the first year . Beuatiful sound .
