well ferrari have never won a world championship with a v12, but with a flat 12 they have won 3 drivers titles and 4 constructors. so i say flat 12

They run a V10 like everyone else now (only more powerful ).

So technically, I suppose this should go in the historic forum...

Er, anyway, flat 12.

They got 333 from dividing 4L from 12 cylinders.

ferrari have used flat 12s in all their f1 cars of the 1970's plus the 1980 312t5, as well as the 312pb of 71-73.
plus porsche had a flat 12 in the back of the 917, thats a lot of gorgeous cars there, thats why i say flat 12's

Sure the flat 12 was very succesful, but nothing can beat the sound of their V12. I last heard it in Belgium 1995 and just the memory of the sound sends cold shivers down my back.

I believe Ferrari had a 3litre V12 in development along with the V10 in 1997-1998 and rumors are it was more powerful that the V10 without the outrageous fuel consumption of the ones from the early 90's. Then suddenly V12's were banned.

And yes, 333 stands for the displacement of a single cylinder. Same goes for some other models such as the 456 (also V12).

The boxer was a great engine and because of its low centre of gravity works very well for weight distribution. Its problem was the ground effects and the need for venutii. It was too wide so had to go in favour of a V12. I gues that configuration came about purely because it was Ferrari's "trademark" in its road and GT cars of the late 50's early 60's.

Surpirising to read they never won a championship with it but its probably correct.

A sad statistic really.

Which is perhaps appropriate (depending on your point of view). Many think Ferrari were at their best, or perhaps most loveable/passionate, when they weren't winning championships!

I always liked the sound of the Honda V12's from 1991 - 1992........beautiful. Almost an equal with the V12 of 1995 Ferrari used......that sound is just so.....well, it summed up the ferrari of old for me really!
