Leaders retiring on the last lap
How many races were there in which the leader retired on the final lap? These are the ones I know of:
Canada 1991 - Nigel Mansell (gearbox failure) Spain 2001 - Mika Hakkinen (engine failure) I think David Coulthard was leading at Italy 1994 before he retired on the final lap with a fuel pressure problem, but I'm not sure. |

Jack Brabham ran out of fuel on the final corner at Brands once.
Also someone overshot the last corner at Monaco once. (Rindt?) |

Monaco 1982 is the obvious classic. At the start of lap 77 Prost led from Patrese, Pironi, De Cesaris and Daly. All those led in the last two laps, Patrese was the only one of those to be running at the end, and the only driver to complete the whole race. Also, Prost was stuck in 4th gear on the last lap somewhere in 1982, when Rosberg passed him.

wasnt canada 1991 with nigel mansel a driver error due to him waving to the crowd? i heard that just by word once and it was long ago so easy to be mistaken and i will gladly stand if corrected. But, that would be hard to forgive, for the fans, team and the driver. Man, that would suck

67 Italian Grand Prix ring a bell?
Clark ran out of fuel on the last lap after making one of the most memorible drives ever. In the 64 GP of Mexico Clarks engine sieze from an oil leak on the last lap... What about the 64 Belgian GP? Gurney ran out on the last lap Hill ran out on the last lap and McLaren was mis-firing so badly that Clark was able to nip by for the win. |

Canada 1991. The engine cut-out. I think twig is right. It seems Nige didn't keep the revs up while waving to the crowd.
Monaco 1982. Bizarre! It should be mentioned in the funniest moment thread. The DC moment is also being talked about in the funny thread. I think he was second at the time. Damon Hill's tyre punctured very near the German GP in 1993, depriving him of his first win. I think this was with 2 laps to go not one. He won at the following race anyway. |

Canada 91?
Mansell continued to lead in dominant fashion until the very last lap when, waving to the crowd, he allowed the revs to drop too low and the car stalled. With no power to drive the hydraulic system he could not select a gear. He was out with less than a lap to go. |

Prost germany.Um-87?Remember he tried to push the car to the line. Those years-86&87, didn't alot of leaders run out of fuel on or near the last laps?!
Canada 91?I heard that the williams systems were abit crude & it would have been easy to stall if the revs dropped too far. They built a lower rev limit into it by the next race-Still it WAS dumb to be doing what nige did.... |

1977 French GP at Dijon.....
John Watson in the Alfa-powered Brabham BT45B had a fuel pickup problem on the last lap and was passed by Mario's Lotus 78 less than a mile from the finish..... |

1974 Argentinian GP - Race leader Carlos Reutemann ran out of fuel 200 meters behind the finish line - The race was finally won by Dennis Hulme.
A great shame for Argentinians |

1982 at Monaco was the greatest, prost lead and crashed, patrese led and spun, pironi led and ran out of fuel, de ceseris lead and retired, patrese re-took the lead and won.
OT, but how about great last lap dices for the lead, Monaco '92 |

I remember a U.S. F1 event - Dallas comes to mind - where Nigel ran out of fuel. They zoomed in on him straining to push the car and looking like he was about to have a coronary. (Out of shape as usual.) I think it was on the last lap but I'm not dead sure.
