I reckon Doune might be quite interesting to try some gravity events!, maybe start at the top of east Brae ! i think you would be really pushing it to get round Garden gate with the speed you'd be hitting, I had a near miss round there on a bike when I was a wee bit younger

Gurston Down is regularly used as a gravity venue.

And Prescott a year or two back. Was ****** off at last minute request to sacrifice marshals' lunch break to put out & then retrieve straw bales but impressed with the number of drivers who volunteered to help.

It may be worthwhile talking to the Longleat estate. They ran hillclimbs there back in the 90's (and before), but I believe that noise was an issue - so silent downhill running may be looked on favourable, and Lord Bath is a bit of a character to say the least, anything that may help his estate break even would be looked on favourably, I'm sure.

Weighty Problem!

I would have thought the following would be suitable:

Barbon Manor; Doune; Gurston Down; Harewood; Lerghy Frissel (Isle of Man); Loton Park (from Fallow down to Triangle); Prescott; Scammonden; Shelsley Walsh; Wiscombe Park (from Martini down to Wiz Straight).

Any hillclimb venue by its very nature is suitable but the speeds these vehicles could attain would prohibit them on safety grounds.

I personnally despise them because IMO they are unsafe unstable and in some cases badly engineered.

A certain Mr Black X had great fun at the FOS with two broken collar bones because they kept falling off exiting Molecomb.
As for having them at Shelsley i dread to think of the consequences.

I think having it at Shelsley would be so much fun, can't be much more dangerous than cars going up at over 130mph! Think stopping before the paddock might be an issue!

Have you ever seen them?

Lets just say that safety is not a priority.

Memories of free wheeling down Doune (Doon Doune if you're Scottish) after the car broke is that the section between Oak tree & the start can almost bring the car to a standstill

Let me know which day they will be playing...

I'll stay at home....

As the Right Honourable rescuedude mentioned I had a busy day a few years ago at the FOS thanks to the soap boxes and they were doing around 60-70mph on the approach to Molecombe...
They would be going a great deal quicker at Shelsley......
After the driver was ejected during a roll they then managed to move a straw bale with their shoulder....

The same straw bale could not be moved by 7 marshals and we had to call for the baler machine to move it for us.......Just gives you an idea of how much momentum the driver/pilot is carrying when they hit something....

A hillclimb weekend has run continuously since 1990 (and in the 60s before that), despite the regular increases in the fee by Longleat and the heavy burden of setting up and taking down MSA-required safety features. Noise has not been an issue, other than for the competitors and marshalls camping next to the wolf enclosure being woken by their dawn chorus at 06.30. The willingness and ability of just about every other passtime under the sun, from air racing to dog shows, to pay more than a hill climb can afford is a problem.

Just out of interest - we have been hilclimbing at Longleat for the last 8 years!! Normally one weekend in September a double header. great hill, fantastic atmosphere, good viewing and notoriously slippery!

Plus Longleat was a British Hillclimb Champinship venue in 1965!

Pity they still don't use it!

And club competitors certainly don't want the British Hill Climb championship at Longleat! Longleat is well oversubscribed and already suffers enough from an excessive number of "one make" classes, when there is already an adequate class structure for "South East regs day" and "South West regs day".

Getting back to those horrible down hill things i believe there is a problem with insurrance in that for them there ain't none covering the marshals as it's not a MSA licenced event.

But if i'm wrong perhaps someone could clarify this.
