Porsche 918 (aka Porsche all-the-ACO-won't-let-us-race)

The specs are crazy: 3.4 liter RS Spyder V8, 500+ hp, 3 electric motors good for another 160 kW, 3 liters per 100 km / 78 mpg, under 7.30 around the Ring

But what's interesting to me is how close it is to what Porsche would probably like to enter in the prototype class at Le Mans. The problem is that the 7-speed double clutch gearbox, the electric motor powering the front wheels, the push to pass button and probably many other details of the hybrid electric system are illegal under current ACO rules (the same rules that have meant the 908 Hybrid stayed of the track). Still, the car can be driven with its engine off and the drive to the front wheels is how it's done on most performance hybrids.

Which should get you to the nearest filling station in your neck of the woods, Huge, so stop complainin', lol.

(Sorry, but that was too good to pass up.)

P.S. Could someone please tell me who let the Lambo styling department into the Porsche studios?

Here is a more detailed article:

Note : " For 2011, insiders are already predicting LMP1, a race version of the 918 Spyder, which would comply with planned hybrid-friendly Le Mans regulations".

There are rumors there will be a coupe and r versions, which should be sweet, about the top speed, probably becose off lift (no roof)

but I dont get one thing, this is an excelent show case of technology, and mind numing performances, but I hope this wont be the replacement for the carrera gt, this car is way to heavy and underpowered to keep up with the upcoming competition. I know it has combined hp of 700 hp but it also hs 1500kg and the 7:30 time is already beaten by last gen supercars, example Enzo ....

No - the engine is the RS Spyder's 3.4L.
Read the article I posted.

As far as top speed goes, we’re quoting 200 mph. The car could in fact go quite a bit faster, but to do so it would require more downforce, which in turn means more drag. Such a move would not be in-line with the underlying green message.”

it needs more down force because it has a lot of lift, becose of an open roof!!
4.6 l in production trim

here is a quote

In concept car form, the 918 Spyder uses the same mid-mounted 3.4-litre V8 that has powered the American Le Mans Series RS Spyder, but the engine will grow if (or when) the concept reaches production. Just as the Carrera GT’s 5.7-litre V10 was born as a 5.5, Durheimer revealed that a 4.6-litre V8 had been calculated as ideal for the stunning new 918 supercar. A seven-speed PDK gearbox sends the engine’s power to the rear wheels

"XG10 stands for X1, Geneva 2010. X1 is the code name of the 918 Spyder, which is only one version of many. Potential variations include a 918 coupe, an electric 918, and a 918 RS/RSR".

and

"The body style is not yet cast in stone. Although the show car is a Spyder, generating a coupe version would be simple.”

Clearly if they want to build a reliable V8 with 500+ bhp, they need to increase the displacement. With 3.4 liter the engine has to produce more than 150 bhp/liter. As a comparison the highest number for a production NA engine currently is 127 bhp/liter for the Ferrari 458.

ACO rules meant the only test the Peugeot 908 had to pass was rolling through the Silverstone pitlane with the electric motor only.

And the Porsche CEO has already said no new LMP car in 2011, maybe possibly conditionally 2012. The point is that this car's powertrain is more advanced than what the rules allow, and Porsche is probably planning on developing over the next 3-5 years like it did with the Carrera GT; it would just be much better if the rules allowed part of this development to take place on track at the back of an LMP1.

FI engines are limited to 2 liters for LMP1 '11. Basically the current LMP2 engine size rules.

Oh, okay... well, if they're serious about using the RS Spyder engine, I guess not, it would take quite a heavy amount of re-engineering to use turbochargers effectively on it. The NA engine is tried, tested and proven.

Nice video.

But is it just me or does it look fake? The indoors 'showcase" looks like it's out of Need for Speed (proven by the fact that they show the 917 in the very same "lighting conditions") and even the camera movements around the "real car" at Paul Ricard don't look natural. At least they must have built a real one for Geneva...

Agreed. Reflections are way too unnatural.
Pretty obvious render there.

Don't think they were very worried about it.
They showed the model without any textures at the end, anyway.
