V8 SUPERCAR racing lives inside a bubble. And it's about to burst.
The world financial crisis is having a real and immediate effect on motor racing.

But the real problem for V8 Supercars racing is that difficulties on the stock market are only exacerbating the crisis facing the Australian automotive industry.

Ford has significantly reduced its monetary support of V8 Supercars because sales of its new Falcon have not lived up to expectations.

No doubt Ford Australia are in some serious trouble - radio reports in Melbourne this morning indicate that the Ford Focus, which FA were hoping to start manufacturing in Australia from 2010/2011 onwards, will NOT be shifted from South Africa as they had hoped (FA apparently failed to achieve some $18 million in cost cuts required to get the contract for it).

Because of this expect further major job and other cuts from FA in the coming months.

And the news from the US of A that GM and Chrysler are talking about a merger adds further fuel to the fire. The sales figures for new cars in the US over the last 2 months have tanked - apparently the main reason is that finance is VERY difficult to get.

So if GM and Chrysler do merge does that mean we'll be race pimped 300c's here in Oz or does it mean that they're both in so much trouble that the motorsport budget will be slashed or eliminated??
