And don't forget the first rule of flying: make sure the number of landings matches the number of take-offs. If it doesn't match, look out the window to see if you're in the air!

Oh they'll match no matter what happens, it's just the amount of control that varies. Unless he's abducted by aliens of course.

Incidentally, my personal tally is more landings than take-offs at the moment. |

Ah Well not the greatest weekend for Tenther racers . MG David had engine wows . Our 1 st race was red flagged as nasty accident . Driver ok but broken foot and back injuries . Left us all feeling a bit down about todays race . Start got delayed and it then rained and I just had a steady run to P 4. My highlight was youngsters coming by afterwards telling me my engine sounded the best . Chuffed as I built it . Team Delta staying here tonight . Beer and Pizza . Head to Nurburgring in the morning .

Sorry to hear about David's problems - it's a long way to go for that to happen, but at least you are all in one piece. Enjoy the beer & pizza!

With me it seems my suitcase has made one less flight than I have. Last seen at Barcelona airport when I checked in for my short flight down to Alicante. The airline's words of encouragement amounted to Üsually, lost bags turn up somewhere within 72 hours. Im getting bored with wash 'n'wear and/or buying something to wear each day. However it seems what was delayed luggage'' yesterday has today been re-classified as lost luggage!
Edit: They just rang to tell me they believe they have found it and will try to deliver it to Mum's home today. I just hope the final leg of my bag's journey has not been given to Mañana Movers''! Her (90th) Birthday party is this afternoon and evening and not only are my clothes currently missing but also a few bottles to help with celebrations are in the bag also! Happy Days! Breaking news! Lost AND fund dept at Barcelona airport are happy to report an afFordable mega Fiesta organized thanks to the courtsey of a passenger coming from Corkscrewland. Wandering half-naked and using a moped while wearing swimming suits only he could be arrested promptly! Happy day!
Happy birthday to You, Mamma Dave. |

In theory at least, the incidents of "lost" luggage should be considerably reduced nowadays from major airports around the world due to the vastly improved baggage handling with the assistance of modern technology. So I do hope that your missing piece turns up this afternoon, Chris.
It actually amazes me that during the 70s and the 80s that I only had one instance of any baggage going missing, taking into account at the height of my travels, I was taking flights at least once every fortnight and sometimes multiple times during a two week period; my personal record was 8 countries in just 11 days. Doing that, you quickly learnt how to live out of a suitcase; everything packed for easy access to all the important bits and pieces. The one occasion that one of the two suitcases that I usually travelled with happened in Tokyo. I was delayed going through immigration because of their processes back then, and by the time I got to the baggage carousel, one of my cases was nowhere to be seen. The big problem for me was that I was only scheduled to be in Japan for about 36 hours so it was important that the case was found promptly. Then a catastrophe occurred, the official dealing with logging the details of the lost case then "lost" both my passport and the airline ticket which nobody could then find. So the police had to be called and they gave me a report which I needed to register in my hotel, and which I had to hand in to a police station in the city. When I checked into the hotel, there was a message from the airport to tell me that the suitcase had been handed in to the authorities at the airport; apparently, another passenger had taken my black suitcase mistakenly believing that it was his navy blue case. I'm still puzzled by that, but at last they then delivered them to the hotel later that evening. After reporting in to the local police station and completing multiple forms about my still missing passport and ticket, I returned to my hotel room and then received a phone call from the authorities in the airport to tell me that my bits had been found; someone had, seemingly, knocked them into a waste basket and an observant cleaner had noticed them. For reasons best known to them, these items couldn't be delivered to me; I had to take the hour plus journey out to Narita airport to collect them. So, back I went, however at that time there were very big protests taking place around Narita, and the police and their defence forces had created a ring of steel around the area and everyone entering had to show their documents before being allowed into the airport and, of course, I didn't have them because the authorities in the airport had them. And that meant that I was escorted off the airport express coach, which back then was the easiest and quickest way to travel between the city centre and the airport with their own designated traffic lanes. I was then escorted by an armed guard to retrieve everything and then took the journey back. |

Yes, I think they have measures in place to make sure lost luggage isn't lost for very long. So fingers crossed for you Chris.
It was more common back in the day when airports weren't as organised as they are now. Glad it all worked out for you Mike and that it only happened once. That sounds like a lot of hassle to get it back. |

My sister flew down to use our place in Spain with one of her sons and his wife, unfortunately his luggage didn't appear. However as he is about the same size as me he just used some of my clothes for a few days until his case was delivered to him
Sue and I flew back from Mexico years ago but her case went "somewhere else" she got it back 3 months later completely ruined with most of the stuff soaking wet or missing Being frequent travellers to Spain we don't have to take any luggage at all and can just go to the airport with a passport and phone. If we did we would't put anything important in a case that we couldn't carry on ourselves. |

Crikey Mr. Harte, that all sounded a bit too dramatic for my liking.
When I was a regular traveller to and from the continent I ought a decent, strong briefcase and a saddlebag for it. The Scandinavians would always ask for duty free booze to be provided and the Finns liked cigarettes too. So the briefcase was useful for some such goods to save the need for an excess of plastic duty free bags. The saddlebag would hold a weeks worth of office clothes, etc. For most flights the carry-on restrictions were, back then, quite generous and for awkward size restrictions the soft saddlebag and the option to remove it from the briefcase worked very well. Even better when flights were full and overhead lockers overflowing. The bag could be fitted in somewhere and the briefcase could go under the seat. Longer trips to hot places were not so easy but I always made sure I had at least a day or two's necessities with me just in case anything I had to put in the hold went missing. |

Grant, possibly I should have explained that I was often away for 6 to 8 weeks starting in the Netherlands before going on to the Far East. Business attire varied from country to country, fairly casual in Singapore to proper suits and ties in Hong Kong. Thus I needed the 2 suitcases, mainly for clothes, but also to bring samples of goods back with me.
About Hong Kong, in the 70s and 80s, as I said, you were expected to wear a business suit no matter the weather. It always made me laugh that ex-pats would wear their suit jackets when outside of the office regardless of how hot or humid it was, yet the moment that they stepped into their highly air-conditioned offices, where it felt like stepping into a fridge, they then removed said jackets and proceeded to roll up their sleeves. I did the opposite. |

Some things haven’t changed about travel, but plenty of other things have. Not surprised the Scandinavians wanted duty free booze, but then it’s been common for people to get that cheaper in another country first. I’m amazed how you could carry all that around Grant, must have been a bit of a struggle. But your story is interesting all the same, so cheers for it
