Exposure compenastion when using a convertor

I know I lose an f stop when I attach a x1.4 convertor. What I don't know is how this achieved. I can see 3 possible methods :-

1 Camera and lens (EOS 10D with 300mm f4 L IS USM and Canon convertor
know what I'm doing and compensate for themselves.

2 I take off a stop using the exposure compensation function.

3 I have to set the exposure manually.

Anyone tell me what I need to do please ?

Hi,

You could always up the ISO one.

I go to 400 if it's not that bright, but in full sunshine 200 should be fine.

Sould be OK on TV Mode.

I think this is what you are asking, if not let me know.

I use the 10D with the 100-400mm with the 2X.

Don't worry - the camera/lens will automatically stop down to f5.6 so you don't have anything to do except shoot!

Used a 2x (series 1) Canon TC at Monza LMES, (thanks to German photographer Helmut Schnug) and while the loss of speed wasn't an issue in bright light, there was a definite loss of sharpness. I'm keen to try the 1.4 now.

Thanks to you both, a weight off my mind ! I was recommended the 1.4 as being superior, and as I'll lose only 1 stop as opposed to 2 for the 2x thought it was the choice to make. I'm thrilled skinny with the quality of lens and convertor - both not yet a week old - aaaah.

Through the lens metering takes care of the loss of light.

The 1.4 is a beautiful piece of glass.
