2004 rear wing regulations...

I know I read something a while back about the FIA introducing a "standard" rear wing for all cars for all cars, I presume this has been abandoned now?

As I understand it, cars will now be limited to just 2 rear wing elements, is this correct?

Didn't they use to run about 8 at Monaco?

Yeah, it's going to make it interesting at Monaco if only 2 elements are used. Thank God. Too much reliance on aerodynamics.

What about mid-wings, a la McLaren 95. Are they also banned?

Not heard too much on this recently, but they were also going to increase sidepod and airbox area - to provide more spon$$$orship space. Maybe these things are for 2005 ???

Mid wings were used last year (at Monaco by Renault for example) and I don't think they are affected by how many elements are allowed in the main wing. Certainly not in the past anyway.

Why don't they just make a Monza level rear wing for all the circuits? Now that may make Monaco a bit harder to race!

No wings at all would be challenging and fair for all..

They want Brazil levels of downforce - that's their aim.

Because it wouldn't be FF!!
It would be formula 1 without wings.
Can you imagine it?? 900hp+ with MUCH less grip than now.5 tyre stops per race anyone?LOL
It would also dramatically effect the relative speeds at any given point of a lap.Corner speeds would be waaay lower, braking zones longer, acceleration slower and similar top speed by the time they got to the end of the straight(potentially they would have much greater top speed without wings but no chance of doing it because of the lower acceleration).

Safety would be IMPROVED overall because without wings an f1 car would have consistant braking wether even going backwards or sideways(currently f1 cars loose braking ability when the aerodynamic pieces are turned side on to the direction of travel-going backwards results in a HUGE loss of brakes as the wings lift the car off the road!!)

Where? That's quite a reasonable thing to do anyway.

As I recall Ferrari employed a similar function on their 640/641/ 642 cars on the trailing edge of the undertray / diffusor way back in 1989/90/91. so I imagine any designer worth a penny to a top team designs in applications to disturb the airflow behind their cars.. well I would anyway.

Williams have this serrated raised edge along the back wing to create vortices which are apparently supposed to help downforce, but clearly upset the air behind the car and make it harder to follow.

I don't think there's any evidence for that - you assume that is the effect, but in all of the items I've read about serrated wings that has never been mentioned. In fact - serrated wing edges are often ued on front wings - are you saying that they deliberately upset the air over the rest of their own car?

Having said that, when was the last time you saw an F1 car draft past a Williams in recent years...?

Just a hunch, but that might have something to do with the 900+ bhp in the back!

On the straights, the slipstream effect would only be enhanced by any aero "spoilers".

Pretty sure: This is not the purpose of serrated flaps.
