Whoops, I was thinking of the wrong track and car! Brands Hatch said there was an unofficial lap time of 38.114! The fastest lap ever there was Paul Tracy's pole lap in 2003 of 37.006 seconds. I assume that was champcar.

It is the right track, the Indy track. That was Champ Car and I was there! Cart/Champ Car/IndyCar classify qualifying lap times as official lap times. However, in this case they followed Brands Hatch's definition. I think the lap record for the GP circuit is held by Nigel Mansell, who is no relation to Scott Mansell.

Surely, as the Porsche was not in a race it has to be compared to all laps, even if it is qualifying.

But of course the circuit has changed since Mansell last raced there

Huh, I had no idea how much of the track you'd be able to see from one position!

"Bamber Nearly Breaks Laguna Track Record in 919 Hybrid Evo"
https://sportscar365.com/historic/ba...19-hybrid-evo/ And with that mental gymnastics Dagys means it was less two seconds slower than Marc Gene's unofficial record in a 2003 F1 car. |

He's edited that article. The original sub-headline said "nearly smashes", now it says "nearly eclipses". Did have a chuckle at that.
It's a bit weird the way it's written. It did a 1:07, but no further details on the time than that. The record is a 1:07.7, so it could've beaten the official one? Albeit unofficially? Duno, just weird. |

I'm not confused, but this "nearly breaks/smashes/eclipses" is like saying you nearly win in the lottery every weekend by getting half of the numbers right.

I'm guessing there's some weird insurance restriction on either the weekend or the track that limits what Porsche can do or it is willing to pay for. Plus it's just Laguna, Nurburgring I can fully understand, and think Porsche would pay whatever to run it, and Spa was likely easy to rent, Grade 1 track with all the safety and support staff that entails, has history most people will recognize, and probably the closet they could get to F1 times. I think we all would appreciate it only running for lap records at every track, most would prefer in race meeting lap records over empty tracks I would think though.

The car is there but its fancy schmancy custom one lap tires aren't. Funnily enough if you put it on normal tires the lap times are pretty normal.

9 seconds faster than dpi's pole is normal? They weren't even pushing the car and they confirmed that they would not go for a lap record.

It should be 5 seconds or so faster. DPis are currently balanced to LMP2s, and LMP1s tend to be about 6-7 seconds faster on longer circuits.

It was foggy and cold on Friday Morning when the 919 had
come within 1.5 seconds of the record. I thought it was gonna break it for sure once it warmed up. It was still a pleasure to gauge this car in person for the first time and see and hear the performance |

I think the best lmp lap times there are from the lmp2 Acura/Porsche Spyder vs Audi R10 days. Iirc the pole lap in 2008 was the best lap there ever for an lmp car. The Acura was able to do a 1:10.1xx. I'm sure the exact time is on the internet somewhere but I remember that clearly since it dusted the heavier Audi. This Porsche would easily eclipse that time by some margin. Oh well, we're left with what-if's unless they bring it back.
