Aussie V8s to Silverstone?

Hey gang

I'm a UK circuit marshal working mainly at Silverstone and in light of the news that we've lost the GP from 2010, it got me thinking back to something I heard a while back.

I was told that some years ago when Bernie was last threatening Silverstone with the axe that the circuit management had costed bringing the V8 series over to the UK for a flyaway event. My question to the forum is does anyone know anything about this? And moreover, would anyone like to take a wild stab at how much it would actually cost, in comparative terms, to arrange such an event (bearing in mind that Bernie reportedly wants £11m to host the GP at Silverstone from 2010, with a 5% annual increase thereafter)?

I for one would love to see Messers Lowndes, Tander, Whincup, Ingall et al over here, love the series, love the cars, love the racing I say get it done!

One love all

SL

I'm sure that many here would gladly chip in with a few quid of their own money if you promise one thing - make sure they don't return downunder (especially anyone who speaks with a lisp!)

If they are still around in 2010 you never know what may happen.

Probably cost about a third of the price of F1 - but if you listen to the "lisp" V8s would generate three times the paying spectators that F1 does so the price would need to go up accordingly .

I think its a good idea, much better venue than Bahrain, but are enough of the cars exported for it to be worth it as exposer to the series?

TSR has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Please do not give the Wiggle anymore crap idea's. NO WAY.

And what would both FORD & HOLDEN get out of it, both are struggling money wise, and England is a two litre country, so what benifit would they get.

Could be a double away event, and continue on after Bahrain race.

I would love to see the V8's in the UK.

They need a real touring car series there.

I would much rather them at Brands though.

You obviously dont watch the 2 litre cars, because if you did then you would see that the racing is 100 more competitive than our Supercars.
You can even see overtaking over there which is PROPER racing.

I admit I don't watch the BTCC. It's a bit hard when it's not shown in Aus too.

How was I supposed to know. I don't have Foxtel or anything fancy like that. I guess I like the V8s that much.

Let's put it this way. There are motorsport torrent sites in existance. Some of them do have the BTCC. I'm not suggesting that you use them, I'm just saying that they exist.

The WTCC, which uses the same machinery (FIA Super 2000) as the BTCC is also very good, and normally it's streamed on the Eurosport website.

The 2000 cars are quite good for racing on the British circuits, they do look like fish out of water on one or two of the WTCC tracks. They could be interesting at some of the V8 Supercars tracks, though.

I have an idea....

All we need to do is place 28 loaves of bread in a place where each driver can steal one, then we can transport them at the Govt's expense...

About time the Poms took some back...

I meant to say that it's not shown on T.V., my bad.

When I'm not on here, I'll try the Eurosport site, see if they have any other good videos on it.

THe current Govt over there is trying to stemmi the influx of "those convict decendants". We could give them the old reverse $5.oo pound tourist trip.

BTCC in known as the 'Crash 'n' Bash' over here, questionable driving standards to say the least but I guess it makes for a good spectacle (although as a marshal I'd rather they behaved themselves out there).

Agree with one of the previous posters about farty 2-litres tho - gimme a fat V8 any day! And rear-wheel drive into the mix, happy days!!

But seriously, it's all about brand exposure for the manufacturers involved, surely? I know we can't get our hands on a Holden Commodore or Ford Falcon over here (and more's the pity) but would the Ford and GM brands as a whole not benefit from the spectacle that V8 racing would bring to another passionate motorsport fanbase? And hey if it took off what's to say that these models couldn't be rolled out across the European market? It would open up new avenues so I would have thought the manufacturers would at least be receptive to the idea.

Is that really a serious suggestion with petrol at £1.20 a litre (around 2.50 AUD)?
