Murray turns down Sky commentary role
According to AUTOSPORT, the legendary Murray Walker has turned down the opportuinity to commentate on Sky's new pay-per-view F1 service.
He said "There was a possibility of it [working for Sky] but there’s no point in me saying I’m retiring from commentary because I want to stop while I think I’m at the top only to go on somewhere else". "If I was going on anywhere I’d go on with ITV because I was very, very happy there and I don’t want to push my luck by being somewhere else and going downhill." |

I can't see how he could do anything else. You can't spend a whole year retiring and receiving all the gongs, plaudits and awards - not to retire at the end of it!
On the subject of BSkyB - I'm not sure what the take up will be in the UK. Pay per view services generally haven't had a good reception in the UK - and I believe its not going to be particularly cheap to watch. Die hard fans will be glued - but the rest may decide the ITV coverage is good enough after all, faced with the alternative of sticking their hand in their pocket every other weekend! |

It looks like it will be £12 per race, which makes more than £200 for a whole season...

I'd love to see Murray commentating on Test Cricket and One Day Internationals. Now this would really spice up teh game of cricket.

Silvers, I agree 100%. This deal looks great and I haven't got anything better to spend my money on (unfortunately), so why not? If its not much cop you can always not bother anymore and revert back to ITV for free, but does ITV really meet the modern hardcore F1 fans demands anymore? They go out of their way for football, yet their F1 coverage seems to be slipping. It's just good to have the choice at last. I mean, look at the plusses: no James Allen, no Grim Rosenthal, no Toney Jardine, no ad breaks. Fri practice, Sat practice, warmup, full press conferences at every race, more interviews, not to mention getting to browse different options... I think the only thing I think I'll miss is Martin's commentary. Hope you’ll have the chance to get it soon, VB & Australian friends. |
