Sirotkin was orginally going to be a Sauber driver in 2014, but I think they eventually decided he was too inexperienced

Oliver Gavin thought he was going to drive at Pacific for the final Grand Prix of 1995 and flew out there, but got told his superlicence wasn't granted and the team would put Gachot back in the car: https://www.motorsportmagazine.com/a...h-oliver-gavin

Yes I mentioned that at the beginning of the thread. At least he got to drive the Safety Car for a few years

Grosjean was talking to Williams for a 2012 seat.
He was also linked in 2013. Other drivers who were aiming to get the seat were: Petrov,Alguersuari and Sutil. |

I’m not sure if he really had much of a chance of going there, he was hardly exactly a driver they would have preferred
Sutil could have, Petrov probably not and Alguersuari probably had other ideas |

Flavio Briatore wanted to put Heikki Kovalainen in a Red Bull in 2007, due to engine partnership and wanted Webber to drive for the factory team.

Nelshinho Piquet were in line to replace Wurz mid 2007.
Also he had an offer from Toro Rosso, to drive there in 2009. |

Kimi was negotiating with Williams to make his comeback in 2012. If it happened, I think Lotus would gave a chance to Sutil, despite the bar incident.
Or they could have had a Petrov-Grosjean duo. Last edited by Theunser; 23 Dec 2019 at 15:00. |

Jonesy was promised the Ferrari seat for 1978 if the team couldn't get Andretti, as they wanted Andretti to help boost their North American market. However when Mario decided to stay with Lotus, Jonesy was all set to sign, but they then decided to go with another North American Gilles Villeneuve

Mark Webber was linked to Mclaren to replace the departing Alonso. But I don't think the Lewis-Mark pairing would have been more harmonious.
If Jones gets that Ferrari, Villeneuve could have got a second Wolf car. But Tambay also had an offer from Maranello, but he choose Mclaren instead. |

Also Patrese was a candidate after a great season start with Arrows.
He turned down Brabham, because he was looking for a Ferrari offer. So Bernie instead signed Piquet. |

Rick Mears was offered a one off drive for Brabham at Long Beach in 80 that he turned down
Also in the same race, McLaren needed a temporary replacement for the injured Prost. They initially approached Hunt the Shunt, but his skiing accident ruled him out. They then tried contacting Hans Stuck, but couldn’t get hold of him, so went with Stephen South |

For the 2015 season Sauber did no only have Ericsson, Nasr and van der Garde contracted (we all know how that turned out), but also Sutil who realised it would be smarter for his career to explore other options and Jules Bianchi.

Mario Andretti was put on standby to replace Tambay for Detroit 84, if Patrick’s leg hadn’t healed properly
The same thing happened a couple of years later, this time when Tambay was with Haas Lola. Andretti was asked to replace him again at the same venue, but Mario turned it down and instead suggested his son Michael, who was refused a superlicence. Eddie Cheever took the seat instead |
