"FIA set to act over tyres and testing"

Ive just read the headline over at Autosport.com and there seems to be an indication that there may be a return to slicks on the cards, and possible futher testing restrictions...

Unfortunatly I am a total cheapskate and don't subscribe to Autosport so can't read any headlines!

bosch! should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
With the single tyre rule we will be be back to slicks by lap 40 in Melbourne 2005. As for testing without unanimity from the teams who seem to be split 1/9 or 9/1 on most issues Im not sure what can be done.

Referring to the possibility of a single tyre supplier, the minutes of the meeting declared: “The FIA was strongly in favour of this. Jean Todt (Ferrari sporting director) proposed that the FIA invite the tyre manufacturers to a meeting to discuss this in further detail. This was agreed.”

The planned meeting with the tyre manufacturers will also include discussions about the possibility of a return of slick tyres, with three fixed compounds for the entire season, plus a banning of tyre warmers and other tyre warming devices.

This relates to minutes from the last meeting that only Ferrari showed up to.

If my memory serves me correctly, the proposal for a return to slick tyres across three compounds came from Williams, as part of the idea gathering process.

I would cheer it from a purely asthetic point of view.

Whether it makes any difference to teh racign will depend on the details of the rules. Single manufacturer? Compound restrictions? Size restrictions? All thse could make more difference than the groves.

As we near the new rules there will be many suggestions...

Wider rears would be nice from both a asthetic point of view and from a fan point of view, we might actually see the cars sideways once in a while!
