re: Auto Union C-type's of 1936
Hello,
I have done a fairly extensive web search & found a good Site at http://www.autounion.btinternet.co.uk/. I understand there a very few of these V16 C&D types around. Does anyone know where I can find the firing order of this V16 Engine? referenced in a book or website? alex v. an 1936 Type C was rebuilt as a show car for the Deutshes Museum in 1937(but may not be alive). Two D-type machines, one 1938 spec. car and one 1939 spec. car. Also a third surviving D type was an ex-show car discovered in Czechoslovakia in the '70s. One '39 spec. V16 mountain climb car is believed to be the only all original V16 car to survive. It is believed to be in the Audi museum „museum mobile“. |

The D-Type was a V12 not a V16. And you are right there is a growing number of these cars about. The UK "restoration" firm Crossthwaite and Gardner" have re manufactured 4 over the past 5 years for Audi.

re: D-type
thanks for the correction but i was only pasting from '
http://www.autounion.btinternet.co.uk/' at that point. They tend to say a V16 was equipped on a 1939 spec D-type Chassis for HillClimbing. The V16 is where my interest lies. I'll eMail 'Crossthwaite and Gardner' as well as the Audi museum „museum mobile“. -av |

Yes, the 38-9 Hillclimb version was a hybrid of the 6l V16 and a C/D Type chassis. As for your original question I'm sure there was a technical book on them published in the mid '80s by Ian Bamsey (??), it was in a series of books, called Technical File (???)

Those Porsche cars and engines
Hey guys, just in case you missed my original posts on this, there is a fantastic tape attached to this years April edition of MotorSport "AUTO UNION ACTION". There is some historical information and a lot of action featuring the great Bernd Rosemeyer in this Porsche GP car.

haymarket@galleon.co.uk This is an English mag, so I really don't know how much the postage will come to, if they have back issues. You could start by trying to find out, via the Gravel Trap forum, if anyone in Canada has a copy, as that might be the easiest way to go. If you love those Porsche GP cars, then the tape is a definite MUST. I just lucked onto this issue because I needed something to read while waiting for my better half at a shopping mall. Good Luck. |

I don't think export copies of Motor Sport carry the free videos because of the differing TV and video systems around the world. There are, however, two excellent videos which include (I think) all the footage seen on that tape and lots more beside: Racing the Silver Arrows Vol 1 & 2.

It came to Australia, Vitesse (Valve Bounce is Australian...), I have it, and it says on the blurb, I'm sure, that some of the film is never-before-seen stuff.

Some European countries use the PAL system like England and Australia, big problem is for someone in America (NTSC)... or France (SECAM). I don't know what modern VCRs can do to overcome these shortcomings, I know I have one that enables me to play all types, but I have been told that the reverse isn't possible with NTSC, for instance. Does anybody actually know about this? |

Without running through the tape, I'm working from memory here, but I think the copyright notice on that material is dated 1991 - it was originally an Audi publicity film. So it predates Racing The Silver Arrows, which were 1995.

If you log onto the Autosport site, you will also see an ad for MotorSport Magazine. It has a Green cover traditionally for as long as I can remember except for one issue, and I "think" that was when Senna crashed. The tape is probably in PAL, but surely, in this day and age, you must know someone with a multi-system video. This issues cover shows Jackie Stewart driving a BRM P261, Jo Bonnier's P25 and Jean-Pierre Beltoise's P160B. It also has some fantastic photos in their adverts for historic cars, including a 1929 Invicta inside the cover, and a 1931 Invicta, and oodles of fantastic historic cars.
The tape is just unbelievable, and the very first shot of the Porsche (Aka Auto Union) GP car sliding around through a curve will bring tears to your eyes. Make sure you get the tape with the mag. If you don't, let me know, and I'll see how I can help. I cannot continue to describe the tape to you, because you'll start crying in your beer. There is also a segment on Michelle Mouton driving the Audi Quattro, which is just unbelievable. She was the best Rally driver of her era, and it was a shame she missed out on the World Rally Championship through a minor malfunction in her car in the final rally. By the way Ray, what was your reaction when you saw the tape for the first time? Vitesse, I'm in Australia, and my copy carried the video. If hyphen is ordering a back copy from England, he would probably get the tape in PAL, which he must play on a multi-system video. I bought my VCR in Hong Kong, and all VCR's sold there are now multi-system. |

Well, did you manage to get a copy of the video of The Auto Union Years from MotorSport? If you have any difficulty identifying the mag, I can scan the cover and send it to you by e-mail. It is definitely not the mag that you enclosed the cover of in your post above.
