Classic GP Moments !

Have to say that one of my favorite moments of recent years of GP racing was Damon sticking one over Michael Schumacher at the Hungarian GP in 1997 in his less superior Arrows ...

its a shame ITV missed it as they were at an ad break , but still it was a classic piece of modern day F1...

Damon looks quite happy with himself too !

Mine would have to be lap 1 of the 1993 European GP at Donnington Park.

Unbelievable and one of those moments where if you were there you knew you'd seen one of the best moments of all time!

In recent years, I think the most classic moment is Michael's face at Jerez, while watching Jacques pass on lap 49, and 50, and 51...

Jacques' description: "Seeing Michael Schumacher standing on the wall at Jerez in 1997 after he failed to take me off. He looked like an idiot and that was really funny. My team-mate Heinz-Harald nearly crashed as he was laughing so much."

As soon as I saw the thread title I thought of Hungary '97 with Damons move on Schumacher, but Sato san got there before me!
I heartily agree with you.

Here's some of my favorites:

Hakkinens move on Schu Spa '00
JVs move on Schu Estoril '96
RB '03 Silverstone (it's new but definitely a classic)
Alesi's win CGP '95
Bergers pole/FL/win Hock '97 (1st race after he went through 3 months of ****!)
Donington '93

Coulthard in Adelaide 1995 and all the other bizzare moments from him. David Coulthard = Homer Simpson. D'oh!

Other favourites:

Suzuka 1994 - Hill beats Schumacher in monsoon conditions to score his best win
Nurburgring 1995 - Schumacher fights off Hill and Alesi to score what in my opinion was his best win
Hockenheim 2000 - Barrichello wins against all odds from P18 to win his first grand prix in what was probably his greatest drive

Hakkinen at Spa in 2000 and Jacques at Estoril in 96 were some of the moments I thought of too. Thanks for reminding me of Alesi's win. Definitely a classic moment. And Berger's 97 win at Hockenheim too, a race he so nearly won the year before, only to retire with a blown engine a couple of laps from the end.

As for something which was both classic as well as humourous (though perhaps not at the time, for the person involved!), how about the 1991 Canadian GP, where Nigel Mansell waved to the crowd as he was driving towards what would have been victory, only to accidentally switch off the ignition!

On the positive side of the Schumacher coin, I'd like to mention his drive to victory in the Spanish GP in 1996. On a rain-soaked Barcelona circuit, he put in a masterful drive resulting in a dominant victory - pure magic.

The 1979 French GP. Villeneuve and Arnoux battling for 2nd place in the final 3 laps. That has to be the most memorable moment of F1 for me. Ive never before or since seen anything as spectacular as that.

Well, I was to young to watch F1 in 1979, so I won't talk about that.

Besides most moments mentioned above, one of my favs is Alesi's drive in Japan in 1995. Though he even didn't finish that race, that's one of the best drives I have ever seen.

My favourite moment would have to be Mark Webber crossing the finish line in his debut in 2002 in 5th place, sitting in the main straight with the whole Fangio Stand giving him an unbelievable ovation is something i'll never forget.

Classic moments....right here goes:

Mansell round the outside of Berger at Peraltada, Mexico 1990. So brave!
Spain 1991, Mansell and Senna duking it out on the straight, sparks flying, millimetres apart!
Suzuka 1994, Damons greatest victory, despite Schuey seemingly falling asleep in the middle of the race.
Suzuka 2000, on the limit battle between Hakk and Schu. The emotion at the finish will live with me forever.
Hungary 1997, for obvious reasons.
Donington 1993. Senna=genius.
Belgium 1998, Jordans first win.
Silverstone 2003!!!!!!

there are so many others, but now I have typers-block.

too bad nowdays when you see a Villeneuve holding off a Renault they keep waving the blue flag.

Phoenix 90 - the repass!
Portugal 93 - Alesi form p5 to p1 at the start
Hockenheim 95 - Hill lap 1 exit
Luxembourg 97 - Mercedes double exit.
Austria 99 - Cubehead taking out Ron Dennis' love child on lap 1
Europe 03 - extra screen time for the Minardis

Ah I remember seeing TV footage of the Gilles vs Arnoux battle....absolutely amazing! Just wish I'd been born to see it!

As a Senna fan not a great moment fo me but the British GP 91(?) where he ran out of fuel and was given a lift back by Mansell is one of those images you never forget!

What about the Belgium GP - The start - Jordan's first win, with a 1-2......

and the best part of it. MS into the back of DC......brilliant! Murray Walker nearly had a heart attack.....

2.Hill passing Schumacher at the Hungarian GP 1997
3.Most of the the nose to tail battles between Senna and Mansell .

Last few laps of Monaco 1982

Alan Jones flying up behind Piquet at Monaco in 1981, Piquet responded by colliding with a backmarker and retiring, then turning around and saying he felt no pressure form Jones!

Anything to do with Bernie and Balestre, FISA and FOCA, the DFV's and the Turbo's.......

Donington 1993 was incredible from Senna - I ebcame a racing addict and Senna fan that day.

I've seen Villeneuve V Arnoux on video, and truly can't beleive it. I wish racing was still like that every week.

DC's off into the pitlane wall in Australia 1995 was hilarous - espeically Murray Walker's ear-piercing squeal of shock.

Oh and corkholio, thanks. For a whle I suspected you were nothing more than a bitter, childish fool,a dn your list has reaffirmed that.

Suzuka 1988 is a classical momment. I mean, how often do you see a driver deliver such a impressive performance in a title deciding race against his teammate who was arguably one of the top 5 best F1 drivers ever?

1988 Brit GP - Mansell's gritty 2nd place
1990 Brit GP - Mansell "retires"
1996 Spain GP - What a drive by Schumacher!
2003 Brit GP - Who wrote that script?

These were all classic moments for me because I was there. For anyone who hasn't seen a GP in real life yet - do it - it is about 10 million times better than watching on TV
