Hi Tristan, couple of questions about the Monoposto championship that you may or may not be able to answer.
I'm exploring opportunities for next year for a couple of cars, a Formula Ford Zetec and a FF1600. and obviously the ability to run them both in the same race series would obviously be a plus point. My question is to do more with the FF1600, exactly how competitive in mono1600 would a FFkent engine be? the rules seem to allude to a fair bit of modification over and above the ff specification. hope you can help! cheers |

The Mono Club forum is probably the best place to ask.
The Zetec is the mainstay of Mono1800 class, whereas the Kent is for Mono1600. Its more about the driver and the setup than the engine. |

Most of the Mono1800 cars are standard FFZetecs and I can confirm these are the cars to beat in mono1800 and no engine mods are allowed. I have won in both mono1800 and mono1600 in standard formula fords it was much harder in mono1600 that said Mono1600 at that time had a very quick Fern driving a very modified RF89. But when Pat is out at Thruxton mono1600 is harder still! |

F4 has a class for FF1600 in 2011. So you would run both cars in the same race |

Hi all,
I sent an email to Simon Davey today asking these questions, however they could possibly be better asked here. I raced in the 750mc F4, Class A championship in 2009 and i'm looking to do some racing again in 2011 with the same car although the F4 calendar looks pretty poor this season. Therefore a switch to mono looks pretty attractive. The car is a VD RF00 modified to FF2000 spec, with an 1800cc engine, and i was just wondering which class it would race in and if it's the 2ltr class, would it be competitive? I wouldn't be able to afford the change to a 2ltr engine so would have to basically run it in the F4 spec. Thanks, David Marshall |

Dave did u get an answer to running you car in mono? Feel you would be a bit short of car spec in mono 2000 but with your skill you should be able to make up any difference!

I'm not a Mono racer any more so am probably a bit out of date but your car would almost certainly be in Class A in F4 spec & may not be as quick as the front running Dallaras etc. However, Mono, like most club championships depends greatly on driver talent & that can overcome a great deal. Remember that a few years ago Jonathon Lewis won races in Mono with an F4 spec FF2000 Van Dieman. In the same year he was racing in both F4 & Mono with the same car - he may have changed choke sizes for Mono but that was all (The fiollowing year he did put a 2 litre engine in, though). So, if you are quick enough, the car can be. You will certainly find plenty of people to dice with & enjoy yourself.
Alternatively, you could put the engine spec back to F Ford Zetec spec & race in Mono 1800 where the car will definately be a front runner (cars in Mono 1800 can run with wings, even if they are F Ford Zetec engined). |

A few F4 class A guys race both F4 and Mono2000 the guy who won the championship last year did (sorry name escapes me). I think (you need to check) that your car would be in classic mono2000 now and would be very competitive, the F3 based cars are too quick now in mono2000. you would need to fit a totally standard FFZetec engine to race in Mono1800 not sure about some of the other mods like hubs and brakes etc Wings are ok. You'd be better off selling the class A car pocketing about £8K and buying a standard FFZetec! |

In 2010 we had Malcolm Scott and Jennifer Scott racing with us in between 750MC rounds. They were both racing in Mono2000 class.

Dave, congrats on the license - glad to hear your back..
I would put the bigger carbs on and find a trick diff for the car and leave it like that. The year we raced together (08) the mono guys were a little bit quicker at the power tracks - but around some of the twisty places we were a bit quicker with the standard F4 car. You can also run sticky rubber in mono and put a cheap 5 speed LD200 (nobody uses them anymore) onto the car... I would say you would pull a good 1-1.5secs with those alone - and whilst you may not win - you wont be far away. From what I have heard, both Tristan and Jeremy are good drivers - so you should have some decent competition. Good luck - and wave to me as you lap me!! |

Hi guys, thanks for your replies. I've been away for a while so thats why i've been a bit slow in replying to you all.
I had a couple of emails from Simon Davey and along with the views on here the car should be eligible for Mono 2000 Classic which sounds pretty good. Jez - Which tyres are best to use, are there some that are quicker than the club F3 ones? Also does that mean you'll be in Mono this year then? What are you driving? |

The most common tryes are the soft Avon A53's in F3 spec. Not cheap, around 1100 inc vat.

I think they use harder compounds in CF3, A53 are the soft ones.

The clubf3 normally use a softer compound than the British F3 ones, which are better suited to a more aggressive driver. The same tyres as last year will be used under the MSVf3cup although apparently there is a new wet tyre for this year. The British F3 tyres will be COOPER tyres (harder) where as the MSV ones will still be bagged AVON (softer)

Maybe the prices vary to the championship your running with, the prices I indicated above are what I was quoted today when I rang them, for running in the MSVf3cup

Why these championships don't make everyone use the harder f3 rubber and limit the amount of tyres in these tough times is beyond me. it should be your driving that wins and nit your wallet |
