Prologue in SPA 26-27.04.2021 (Closed)

Hello Everyone,

I would love to hear your opinions on the Prologue going on these days, such as:

BoP of Alpine 106 kg more and 100 ps less
Pace from the Toyotas and Alpine
LMP2 pace - Will they be BoP - ed?

I wonder what the problem with the Nr. 7 Toyota yesterday was..any info on that?

Now, that session Nr. 3 is over, the Toyotas have improved, but it was still not enough for the top spot. The Alpine fell back a little bit today.

The test is now over, and Toyota finally led a session, although couldn't match the lmp2 times from earlier:

Thank you for the links!

There is something brewing in the paddock regarding LMP2 pace. I read somewhere, that LMP2 cars were already slowed down, but looking at the LMP2 times from previous years I can not see a drastical slowdown compared to 2019-2020.

Wondering what Mr. Rob Leupen can do with the ACO board. Either ACO kicks out their concept about Hypercar pace and let Toyota and Alpine lap 3-4 sec/lap quicker, or they have to SLOW THE WHOLE FIELD DOWN, including GTE. It will be interesting how it pans out.

It would be a shame to see an LMP2 win on saturday on outright pace. Even if Hypercars are dominant in the long run, seeing an LMP2 winning qualifying would be a bad commercial to Hypercars..

Easy to say... R13 could do it reverting back to HD bodywork and 2019-2020 eot (about 820kg/700hp) but good luck with that for GR010... they could get some more power but downforce can't be recovered anyway. Considering the complexity of the car, even lose some weight is not very realistic in short term.

They could do it in more steps. for SPA for instance they could give more power to Alpine and to Toyota the possibility to deploy the hybrid power from 1 kmh - even though it would be a serious problem with the engineers to recalibrate the deployment for one lap.

the second step could be the next race where Toyota can take some ballast out - do they have ballast now?

the third step could be easing the on the air restrictor rules - not sure, whether their power plant was scaled down by ACO either..

No doubts toyota is carrying ballasts to reach 1040kg, but the problem lies in the overall concept. TMG designed and developed the GR010 following ACO LMH technical rules and directives, it basically means the car was made to be at its best at that targeted weight...
weight distribution, suspensions setting, hardware and ballast placement, everything was done to be as most balanced as possible at that weight. Drop 40kg to make the car 1000kg heavy is possible of course, but it's not something that could be done in a nigth since TMG engineers would need to throw away most of the data acquired from the tests done so far to find a whole new overall set-up for the car.
As far I know both gibson lmp1 and lmp2 don't use air restrictors, the lmp2 engine is revlimited (>9000rpm = 600hp, 8250rpm = about 560hp according to IMSA bop). The lmp1 engine is fuel flow limited, don't know this year how they're keeping it at 600hp since in the eot sheet is reported only the overall energy per stint.

I totally agree. It seems like WEC has forgotten to slow LMP2 down.

Guess not, LMP2 got a new mandatory harder compound, +20kg increase, an about 70hp cut and mandatory LD bodywork. For sure ACO didn't go too easy on them, I think truth is that oreca 07 is a masterpiece of car and the chaos around LMH rules of recent years just led to this: Expensive and unperformant fatter lmp1 look alike cars.

Thank you for the infos on LMP2. ACO hit them hard and about the Chassis and the complete car I must say, that it is a masterpiece for sure!

OK, thread now closed as really surplus to requirements as Prologue observations can go here in the main thread.
