I don't get it either, I'm just glad they cut out the two driver nonsense. If they're going to restrict it so much might as well make it a single car at a time and give them a set number of laps to go. Otherwise with all the cars on track in the same time you don't always have the opportunity at a clean lap in a 10-minute session.

Was hoping to see Glick improve on free practice 3 time, but sadly they went the other direction.

I find it odd too. It’s a shame as they could make it a little longer and still fit it into an hours viewing. If that is the thought.

Ultimately, I suppose it doesn’t matter. Especially for an endurance race. And it may mix up the grid.

Although I’m fine with them just having the best time over all the practice sessions.

Circuit length in km x 3 = qualifying session length in minutes rounded up to the nearest 5 minutes.

So Spa is 25 minutes
Portimao is 15 minutes

My proposal is - a good long 2 hour session. If you have a problem, then you still have a chance to get it sorted and set a time.

It doesn't help though having virtually every driver abuse track limits.... They know what's going to happen. Do they think the stewards will miss it?

I liked the old Le Mans format where basically all practice sessions except for the very first one counted for setting the grid. And let's face it: this isn't F1 where qualifying gets significant ratings in its own right, so there really is no need for a tailored for TV qualifying format.

About qualif, i would vote for 45 minutes to one hour for each group, GT and Protos. they prepare an endurance race !
Maybe 30 minimum would be OK.

I used to do a bit of marshaling and we were forever replacing floppies. One of our half serious suggestions was to randomly insert one steel post instead without the drivers' knowledge. Perhaps an idea whose time has come...

during an onboard a toyota was struggling a lot running the last 2 right handed turns, that it's basically what I suspected, opposite to LMH, is there that alpine and lmp2 gain a lot of time, infact I'm quite sure alpine can run flat out and getting faster to the main straight to hit the same top speed of LMH despite 100hp less.
Anyway toyota and alpine have a margin of about 0.7s (the half of spa) that should make them safe from lmp2 during first stint.
Alpine is clearly the car to beat on portimao but toyotas will need to refuel one time less (at least).
007 wasn't able to improve FP3 pace, it looked also really unstable reaccelerating after slow corners during pit out lap

Alpine didn’t get it together in Spa qualifying and could, arguably, have been on pole there.

Alpine will need to stop more, but the less said about that the better. So I think advantage Toyota in the race, as Spa.

Isn’t the power v. aero assessed in hypercar so unsurprising that the two cars with different power have similar top speeds and overall lap times? Although there are some differences in different parts of the circuit.

sure, alpine and toyota were in the same performance window at spa.
About top speed, LMH need to slow down in the middle of the 2 right bends and then enter slower in the main straight, recovering top speed by mere power; alpine can run through flat out and enters faster in the main straight where can reach a LMH comparable top speed mainly due a better acceleration.
Is reasonable to expect LMH being able to pass slower lmp2 only by the mid-end of main straight.

It would have been a lot easier to wage this war on the pace of LMP2s if it were just Dallaras, Ligiers and Multimatics. That Oreca is just such a superb chassis, it seems almost impossible to neuter it.

A problem of the ACO's own making. Apologies for pointing out the obvious.

Also obvious, Portimao is a cracking circuit for racing.

Edit - That zoom-in on the Glicknhaus in-car camera was a nice touch. Is that new for this season or did I miss that last year?

Given the state of their front tyres at this (presumed relaxed) pace, any attempt to speed up would utterly wreck them.

Definitely, they've had at least a year to prepare non-hybrid tyres that won't be ready until next season...

Some good action between #29 & #41, just before they both pit.

as far I've understood from the quick radio onboard, westbrook was complaining about a really unbalanced right-front, he was struggling in braking and front right tyre was clearly almost gone.
According to the onboard telemetry, the engine revs up to about 7500rpm, later I'll make some calculations about the possible torque release since mandatory power curve is set by sport regs.

just like spa, alpine pitted after 46-47 minutes, toyotas should be pit around 52-53 minutes maybe
