F2/f3000/gp2

This has always seemed to be an anomoly to me. It's supposed to be the next xtep down from F1. So why has it always been a European series

Historical reasons really.

F1 is Euro-centric anyway.

Teams are based there, keeps costs down if it doesn't go intercontinental.

And ofcourse, GP2 had a race in Bahrain this year - so it wasn't totally based in Europe

And didn't the World series by Nissan (?) go to brazil a few years ago?

Travelling costs are a main reason for not going there. But i suspect that it's not in the interest of a lot of sponsors in gp2/f3000/world series etc. to go outside europe.

i'm not sure about the sponsor thing. if a driver has sponsors, they're either from the drivers native country, or big world brands iirc. i'd imagine the cost issue is a big one, but i suppose places like turkey that are fairly close to europe and evidently bahrain should still get races.

now i'd imagine renault aren't bothered about marketing to countries where they don't have a decent market share.

Personally I uesed to love F2 in the 70's when it was a European Series as we had more than one race in the UK and the races took place away from GP weekends!

its all about the drivers. and the drivers are truely spread worldwide.

sure teams are based in europe but thats logical i suppose.

The Brazil visit for F3000 was completely uneconomical, as it cost so much more than the European races, and it was a poor measure of driver performances because it was initially dominated by the Brazllian drivers who knew the track. As most of the drivers moving yp to the series only know 1 or 2 of the tracks anyway, there is little advantage for the series going outside Europe - especially as most promising youngsters have raced in Europe beforehand, or are given the benefit of the doubt in their first season. As for the 'World' series, they couldn't really run that only in Europe without looking stupid, could they?

Did the 'World Series by Renault' leave Europe?
Getting F2 (or whatever it was called) out of Europe has always been a problem. What's needed is a 'Temporada' with several organizers sharing the cost.

I thought the whole point of doing marketing was to improve one's market share.
