Thruxton Golden Anniversary
Finally tonight the Jochen Rindt Trophy for 2 litre single seaters. Aussie visitor Stephen Weller and his ex Niki Lauda March were the the only starters in the Formula Two class but nevertheless Stephen and the rest of the field put on some entertaining racing.

Some lovely and very poignant photographs rb. Louis Trintignant I believe was the brother of fifties and sixties Grand Prix driver Maurice Trintignant, a dual Monaco Grand Prix winner.

Nice to see those drivers being remembered. And yes, I do think Louis and Maurice were brothers, although I can't say I know much about Louis' career. Maurice was a very understated driver, his two wins in Monaco show he was no ordinary driver, if not a great one

"He began racing in 1938, and won the 1939 Grand Prix des Frontières, but his career was interrupted by the Second World War, during which his own Bugatti was stored in a barn. When he rebuilt it for an event of 1945, the Coupé de la Liberation, he overlooked a clogged fuel filter, which caused him to drop out of the race. It transpired that the filter was plugged with rat droppings, earning him the unenviable nickname Le Petoulet, "the rat-droppings man"." Apart from his success in Formula 1 he also won the 1954 Le Mans 24 Hour race for Ferrari co-driving with Frolian Gonzales (The Pampas Bull), and finsihed second in 1959 co-driving with Paul Frere in a works Aston Martin. Fine driver. |

Just for the record bauble, he said he found "pétoules" in the tank of his Bug' -a real barn find! - hence his nickname as you wisely say, Pétoulet. To my knowledge, pétoules are rather rabbit poop than rats ones…
I had the chance to meet this always smiling real gentleman several times and even to drive his daily, a single Panhard 24 heavily tuned. Understated, certainly, because he remained simple and easy to talk with all his life long, keeping his wonderful south of France tough accent. Very much appreciated by the team managers was his mechanical knowledge and the fact he was not hard on the car. As you know, my late Dad entered his own Gordini in this Grand Prix few days after La Libération. I was not born yet but a later on I met Toto Veuillet, Monsieur Porsche en France, and Marcel Balsa who took care of my 911's. Thank you for those moving pictures, RBS. |

Can I also recommend The Bugatti Queen by Miranda Seymour and Early one Morning by Robert Ryan. There are lots of cross overs in all 3 books although Ryan's is unsubstanciated, you can understand what was really being written about.

Yes EB, it must have been a hard time to get the old beauties ready for this event. It is said that all the Bugatti specialists were spannering like mad, day and night, to refurbish the cars. The main issues was finding fuel, thanks to the US Army, and as it is nowadays… parts! Many were missing like exhaust systems and carbs, "borrowed" during the conflict. I cant imagine a Gordini or a Bug' using gazogène!! Is it charcoal or something like that in English?
No worry bauble, but ya no sometimes it better to rely on a good friend's info… Last edited by Gerard C; 16 Jun 2020 at 17:10. |

Hooo, is it Richard at wheel? Nice catch!
EB do you think the answer is Roy Salvadori? Its not Tony Brooks. |

I do not recall Salvadori driving an F1 Ferrari.

He did but a 500 (a GP/F2 rather than F1 as you say) back at the 1952 British GP. Oh and a 166 in non championship races.I dont associate him with more modern Ferraris. (But that thought means nothing and im happy to be corrected!)
I thought it might be Brooks..... |

Salvadori did drive a 250LM towards the en of his career.
Brooks looks good to me but did he drive a Connaught B type? I know he did an A type & he started in an Healey & a frazer Nash. |

Wasn't it a Connaught B Type Brooks first came to prominence in by winning the Syracuse Grand Prix ?
