Rod Birley should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Lydden 11th September

Amongst the races at the "Lydden festival of speed" is the return of the stock rod vs stock hatch challenge. At the moment both teams are level on points, with 231 each. The leading individual driver is Andy Sturt from the stock rods on 44 points followed by Robb Carr from the hatches on 41, backed up by Kirk Twyman on 38 and Ian Thorndyke on 36.
Interestingly the stock hatch guys did race on the Lydden oval last year whereas the Spedeworth stock rods are visiting the 600 metres track for the first time.
More details are at www.stockcar.co.uk

Rod - I was talking to some of my fellow marshals yesterday and we reckon this will be a brilliant day. Is the 600 metre oval action in the morning or afternoon? I have put myself down to come anyway.

Timetable is: practice from 9 am on the normal one mile circuit followed by racing from 10.30, classes include saloons, MGs, single seaters, sports/saloons and karts. Then at approx. 1 pm the action moves to the oval with races for the challenge, outlaw hot rods (including a V8 engined Imp),lightning rods, RDC hot rods, super rods and super saloons. In total there will be 28 races. Details are also on www.shortcircuitmag.com and the BARC south east website.

It is just where the link road joins the main circuit, i.e. a few feet in front of the usual one. All the oval races have a rolling start, which worked very well last year, and saves a lot of time.
Marshals will need to sign on twice, like last year, if they want to do both parts of the meeting. There are some slight differences in flag signals and this will all be explained to those involved. It should be a lot of fun and some close racing.

Check out www.rallycrossUK.com for the team - though there are a couple of amendments.

Not playing - Chris Cake
Doubtful but hopeful - Chris Langley, Gary Johnston
Additions - Paul Pascoe, Julian Godfrey, Ian Thorndyke

Should be a good day, though the Stock Hatch team must hope for a miracle to beat the Stock Rods on the oval.

Rod, i assume that the Stock Rod drivers do not have RAC licence's. Are there no problems with them running on RAC approved tracks. The same goes to the cars which do not meet RAC regs.

The oval part of the meeting is run under an ORC licence through Ron Coventry. He supplies officials, scrutineers, commentator etc. The stock hatch drivers will be ORC licenced for the day. It has taken a lot of effort and support to bring the various groups together, last year worked very well, here's hoping it goes OK this time.
Actually, the stock rod drivers did have to obtain MSA licences for the rallycross part of the challenge back in February.

We should also thank Quaife Engineering for supporting the challenge and Spedeworth for non-clashing fixtures.

Would Adrian of not been a good selection to give the Stock Rods a taste of their own medicine!

Rod, If Rallycross pulled away from the RAC, could they run under there own set of regulations (similar to ORC) and run at tracks that had RAC approval. If this happened would the overheads for running a meeting at Lydden be reduced. I know that the Scandinvian county's were thinking of pulling away from the FIA due the rise in costs.

I read an article by Authur Debanham a couple of years ago and he was proposing the idea.

I would think the cost of hiring a venue would be the same. The rest of the overheads depend on insurance charges, staff costs, time keepers, scrutineers etc.

Rod

Anychance of the Mimicross getting an invite in the near future?
Quite a few of us have oval experance and I think we would go well against the rods.
Matt Roach - Former 1300 stock car racer
Scott Lawson - Rebels, Autograss.
Tristam Barden - Stockrods, Autograss
Ralph Budd - Ovals

If you can get at least 20 cars, no problem.

Last year was a bit of an experiment, so some classes were a bit thin. This year the stock hatches are playing with (against) the stock rods. If you want to combine with another group, this is OK.
With regard to fixture clashes this is a real nightmare and has led to the karts withdrawing (majority are at Thruxton). The oval guys have been very helpful, so it is probably time to thank RDC, Spedeworth and PRI (Arena Essex) for all their effort.

Looking forward to tomorrow - hopefully the rain will hold off. Looks like being 9-a-side in the Stock Hatch vs. Stock Rod Challenge, unfortunately Chris Langley & Gary Johnston can't make it.

We'll give it our best shot, but beating the Rods on the oval will be a mighty task!!

See y'all there.

Well it was a close run event, but in the end the Spedeworth stock rods took the challenge by 22 points, a sterling effort by both teams. Alan Thorndyke (698) won the final from Julian Godfrey, who just held off Andy Sturt. Andy was going for the clean sweep, having won all his races back in February and his two heats today. Robb Carr (782) won the other heat, so the rallycross boys did hold their own better, on the bigger Lydden oval. Ian Thorndyke was the top stock hatch over the two meetings, and not surprisingly Andy Sturt was the top stock rodder and best individual points scorer....his arms were so full of trophies oh and the football!!! (little hint here, I think the rallycross boys want him to spend more time playing soccer). Once again thanks to everyone.
