Looks like the chances of contracting trench-foot are quite high.

Luxury! You've got tyres to perch your bags on to keep them out of the mud! What more do you want?!

I don't know about trench foot but I nearly ended up with trencharse on several occaisions..slippery stuff underfoot (and I had elevated Elton John style boots with the caked on mud)...all good fun Come on you lot...I'm sure others have their favourites for sheer "why did they bother destroying a perfectly good bank" Last edited by 275 GTB-4; 12 Jun 2006 at 09:51. |

Any post that doesn't have protection from the elements is a bit of a pig.

Going by all that brown liquid on the floor, I do wonder what it's been in constant use for...
There's bits of Mallory where the bank is fine, but jumping off on a wet day can leave you up to your knees in mud. |

For those that don't realise the marshal post shown in the picture is located at the Oran Park circuit in Sydney's south west down here is sunny Australia.
Seeing the track has about 5 years left before the Sydney housing boom arrives they won't be spending any money on it, in fact the pit complex you can see in the background was built with being dismantled and moved to a new location in mind. It's a shame as it's a great circuit and this is from a Melbournian who lives about 900km away. |

However, Flag Points at almost any circuit you care to name are a bloody disgrace....not to put too fine a point on it Your comments sound dreadfully like management-speak designed to explain why a few hundred dollars have not been spent whilst making thousands and thousands Nothing will ever change so long as people keep apologising, wringing their hands and doing nuffing |

I've worked in worse than that over the years but never bothered to take a picture of it. I actually ended up face planting at Winton a few meeting ago when dropping off a couple of warm drinks to the guys at FP1 when my boots lost traction on the muddy bank and the cups of soup suffered a major spillage (Was a choice between me or the soup & the soup lost). My comment about OP's short life span was more a comment for our Pommie readers than trying to excuse the lack of spending. a trailer load of crushed rock would do wonders as a quick fix and some concrete would be even better. There are steps being taken at a few tracks to put a roof over the marshal posts but it's a slow process. Then again in Australia we have perfect weather all the time not like it is up in the northern hemisphere |

The flag point in the first picture looks more like something I used to stand guard in during my Army operational tours of Northern Ireland and Bosnia! (But without the race track!)

Having done 3 tours of Northern Ireland (2 in South Armagh and 1 in Belfast) I saw enough speeding cars, some of them after a quick drive by!!! Didn't even get time to put a yellow out!!

I'd love to do Bathurst - but it is in Australia!! I don't travel that well.
Mind you, safe or not, that sure looks a good place to stand! |

The people responsible are trying to provide better marshalling facilities at this track...but obviously never heard of a sun dial. The world wide concrete shortage is also in evidence....unfortunately, the place where most of the action takes place is unprotected. The small white box on the concrete wall is the communications land line.

That's a prime example of a lot of effort (appreciated) but a lack of thought or communication with the people who actually do the job. Shame, because they've really tried hard to do something safe and worthwhile, but I guess you have to abandon the actual post in order to flag.

I'd take my chances there more than any Irish flag post! It looks nice and safe, and I doubt you would have to be too far from cover to flag safely.
Even if you have to run the ground is flat and well kept and it appears that there is a very large wide area in which to make good your escape! |
