....in the 2001 BTCC?

Lets just say for a second there are no factory teams and everyone is on a level playing field. There are heaps and heaps of different models to chose from, which do you choose to win the championship in?

I would have to agree with Eddie, there's no substitute for something British, especially in a British Championship and especially when it's an MG. It's an MG 45 (or whatever else they call it) for me too, assuming the vehicle has to be a current production model of course

An Alfa 156 please, Mr Test... Or maybe a 406 Coupe... that will be a nice car, i'm sure of that!

Rover/MG/Austin/whatever don't do a huge amount for me as a brand... i'll have to wait and see what their cars are like. Jaguar on the other hand...

ST = BMW or Volvo 850 in my books..maybe even the station wagon version.

Marcus, did you ever see any races from Volvo's first season in the BTCC in the 90's? They raced the 850 T5R Estate. It was, er, interesting to say the least.

They basically charged around the circuit at a rapid rate, pushing off anyone in anything that got in their way. Funny, but hardly racing.

I certainly did Michael..Jan Lammers was my hero that year..I believe that was 94 ???

anyway they shipped one of the Estates (as they are called in Europe) over here to Australia and it ran in the 95 super touring series here with a driver by the name of Tony Scott..it didnt do much better than what it did in England..but it provided a heck of a show while it was here and in my view provided the best ever sound from a ST car that i have ever heard..

I fell in love with the big Volvo 850 station wagon..funny I didnt take to the sedan quite as much.

Without a doubt - and about the estate? It was fun but not a serious championship attempt, more a marketing exercise and a learning year.

And what great marketing too. With ads which had a photo of the ST Estate and the caption 'Bloody Volvo Drivers' and others too.

Actually, there was very little difference in performance between the estate and saloon when testing the 1994 car. It was the introduction of wings that ruined the estate.

I won't mention the T5-R was after the car raced..but that is just nit-picking. No turbos in ST rules and all that.

Bloody Volvos

As a motorcyclist, I view Volvos with contempt. When people in bowling hats driving Volvos try to end your capacity to breathe in and out you can get a little bit paranoid.

Then (in about 1989) I drove my friends 760 sedan and I realised why. The damn things are so quiet on the inside.

Recently my boss had her BM break for an extended period (there's a story there but for later on) and the dealership gave her a T6 as a replacement. So OK I went for a mid morning run in the country in it. And was seriously impressed. It went fast, handled, looked OK for something with 4 doors. But was still too quiet.

Thank the good Lord for motorcycles.

I know what you mean, when we test drove our current Volvo I thought my father had stalled it at some traffic lights as I couldn't hear the engine...
But you see, they have to be quiet for the bloody health and safety officers or something similar, the rules are so strict in this miserable country. Aston Martin have had to abolish their brilliant Vantage engine as it produces just an inkling too much CO2 for them or something like that. Volvos would probably be noisier if they could be.
If you want noise visit Goodwood next year, those cars can be heard for miles literally.
